Do you high-pass at all?

No. When I say these are as-recorded, I mean it. I did nothing to them. Not an EQ, compressor, reverb, etc was applied to these guitar tracks. Well, I take that back....the lead wah-noise track has a hint of reverb on it. The rhythms have nothing. They are exactly as recorded except for the lead - it has some reverb. Could they be better? Maybe, but I sure like them.

I'm not opposed to EQ the like to help make things work, but I'd rather not do it if I don't need to.

That's an impressive amount of knowledge you have of your setup, then.

Nice..

You don't seem much like an acoustic kind of dude but I'd love to hear some of your acoustic guitar recordings if you have any.

Thanks, I suppose so. I have spent a lot of time and a lot of mixes tweaking and trying stuff. I can't take too much credit though. You plug a good guitar into a good amp feeding good speakers, turn that bitch up, and mic it properly for the sound you want....it's kind of hard to fuck that up.

Louder is better though IMO. Write that shit on my tombstone. Louder is better. I'll never be convinced that low volume guitar recording is a good idea. You want big roaring guitars? Record them that way.

Nice..

Lol. I don't have any. I loathe acoustic guitars with every cell in my body. They're fine for other people, but for me, there's nothing rock and roll about an acoustic guitar.

I love everything about this track, except the clicky/clappy sounds. I just find them annoying and distracting. Everything else sounds just monstrous and those sounds detract from it, even more so that they seem to be there all the time. Brilliant, otherwise. :D

He's got one. I've heard it. It was really good. A couple years ago, I think. You'd have to dig.

Thanks bubba. You know, handclaps have always been one of my biggest weaknesses. Besides my recent "Judy is a Punk", which I think had good claps in it, I don't think I've ever done decent handcalp tracks. They always sound too slappy to me. I think I just never do enough tracks of them, but shit, I don't wanna clap through a song for 20 tracks.

It's actually, much to my extreme disappointment, the best selling track I've ever done.

I'm sure you're not that worried but I always put my back to the mic so the handclap isn't direct.
I find it makes a big difference. I do layer them too but I'm usually working to a click so I don't have to re-take.

I'll try that one day. I usually clap WAY off the mic. Still sounds crappy.

Not trying to hijack the thread but im really curious ...what are you miking your amp speakers with greg?

My usual go-to "technique" lately has been an SM 57 in the general vicinity of where the speaker's dustcap and cone come together. I stick a mic right on that seam, give or take a few cunthairs. Generally more cone than dustcap. But right at that junction. I also stick an Audix i5 on the edge of the speaker, right inside the speaker doping. Both mics straight on axis, right on the grillcloth. Then I usually blend both at 100%. I get bright clarity from the almost-centered 57, and big fullness from the edge i5. If one overpowers the other, I just adjust the blend.

I'm recording my guitars with a shure PG58. Man, I need to get a SM57.
Thanks for the info.

Getting a 57 wouldn't be a bad idea for anyone. But it's not gonna miraculously turn a questionable guitar sound into a good one. If you're not liking your guitar sounds, make sure everything else is in order before you blame the mic. Dialing in a good sound is absolutely the most important thing, but right after that comes placement. A good tone and good mic but bad placement will still yield bad results most of the time.

awesome - and welcome back! the flying monkease cover this song also - usually wind up kicking shit over and off the stage. Your version sounds great on my system - I don't think I could change anything to make it better

I'll have to try that mic technique

Oh this just made my night. Awesome cover!! The feedback into pick slide... Fucking seriously?! I hope you did that with no pants on cause that's the only thing that could make the "story" of this songs creation any better, KILLED IT!!! The two rhythm parts complimented each other perfectly and the 2 different tones, which is out of the ordinary in my world, made perfect sense for this song. If there is only one criticism I would say, this is a Stooges cover, the claps must be LOUDER as I was not completely annoyed with them!! Hahaha. I am the new guy here and can't wait to check out more of your work!!

Haha thanks a lot. Yeah the claps, I need to work on them. I'm gonna get to it, but not today. Today is football day. :D
