no fast foward or rewind

Hey all, A friend gave me his 4 track Porta2 Mini studio w/cassete. Worked fine then the next day came home on it was on and the fast foward and rewind buttons do not work, everything else does though. Strange. When I press either button they stay on for 2 seconds then shut off. Is this something I can fix and is it even worth fixing? Can I use an external cassette player?
 
From memory sounds like the tape in the cassette has wound up too tightly this used to happen from time to time. What I used to do is get an ordinary pencil and stick it in one of the capstan holes of the cassette and use the pencil to wind it manually until it has less resistance then put it in the porta studio and wind it fully forward and then rewind this usually worked for me.
 
No the cassette is fine, the buttons aren't functioning...... solinoid or fuse?????
 
I don't know about the Porta2 but when that happened with my 244 it was because the idler tires deteriorated and needed replaced.
 
Is that the black round thing that spins?, no I Don't think so, but I'll check. Like I wrote in my original post, the buttons pop off after 2 sec
 
Fixed it, I opened it up and there was a broken band right there
