Hi all,

I'm looking to get a nice useful noise gate in the sub $300 range and I don't even know where to begin. I've read people referring to Drawmer as "THE" gate to have, but I'm wondering if there's anything else out there that compares.

FYI, I mostly record vocals and acoustic guitar using an MXL V67g and Oktava mk012 in a very noisy room. I've used a Beh. Composer as a gate thus far and have found it useful but noisy (it adds quite an artifact after the signal ends but before the gate clamps down).

Thanks.

You can get a dbx 1075 for about $499, but could prob find it on e-bay for less.

Used Valley People Gatex
Behringer Intelligate/Autoquad
Used Furman quad gate
Used Aphex gates

If you get lucky, you may find an ART Progate or a Drawmer MX40 for that price.

Why don't you try a software gate? Gating is a fairly easy thing to do for a computer, and there are many good free gating plugins out there (Floorfish for one). If you're not recording to a computer, perhaps you should invest in doing so?

this was my only compressor/gate for about 5 years...

try putting it in expander mode...much smoother open and close.

Used Aphex 612 or 622 gate. Pretty common on e-bay and they work well. Will be less expensive than a used Drawmer. I have a 622. Rane also makes a nice 4 channel gate but they are harder to find.

Thanks for all the responses, but Halion wins, with a suggestion that not only feeds my need for new gear, but also keeps me from spending money. That Fish Fillets package is great. :D
