Hey guys,
....Looking for recommendations for a nice 50 watt. Im looking for something that's pretty versatile, has a nice solid crunch, but can tone down to a sweet clean as well. ......I know this is a pretty wide open question.... .....just wanna hear some opinions.
thanks

I've got to talk-up my Budda. It's only 30 watts but it is very loud. It's louder than my 100-watt Marshall Valvestate.

I've got the Budda Superdrive 30 2x12. It has 4 EL84s in the power section, 12AX7s in the pre, and a 5u4 rectifier. This amp sounds awesome! The clean channel is sooo sweet and has nice headroom. The gain channel is just as nice as the clean and is verstatile. It won't do metal. Maybe if you stuck some 6550s in it, it might approach a metal sound. But the gain channel can be cranked up to be agressive enough for alternative/modern rock.

The tone of the amp is very versatile also. The mid EQ has a push/pull config that goes from a modern "scooped" sound to a more vintage tone. The mid EQ really shapes the sound and the Bass and Treble are just like cherries on top.

Plus I like the minimalist approach. There's not a million knobs and buttons like on a Boogie Triple Rectifier.

What are you looking to spend???

This question cannot be properly answered without knowing your spending limit.

A triple recto doesn't have THAT many knobs....

anyway, why 50 watts? and when you say versatile, do you mean differently voiced channels? Any amp that gets crunch has all the range from clean up to that, it just might not sound that good.

With 50 watts (tube, bit ss or hybrid) you are gonna have to get really loud to get really good crunch - but then you got some clean headroom to work with.

Some amps have the channel thing and some have different gain stages.

If you want a basic thing like clean to crunch, go way in wattage so you can crank it good and hard - a good basic sound coupled with your guitar's volume knob and your own playing dynamics should do the trick.

Good sounding cheap(ish) low watters - ampeg jets, fender blues juniors, mesa/boogie subways, gibson goldtones

Buck62 asked an important question---what's you budget?

Here are some more:

Studio, live gigs, or both?

What features are you looking for (DFX, effects loop, etc.)?

Are you using it with a modeling pedal (POD, V-AMP, GNX. etc.)?

Paj
8^?

..thanks for the helpful suggestions fellas....

....Im not looking to spend tooo much... ...maybe 5 or 6 bills. I would be using it only for studio recording so volume isnt as big an issue. In fact if there was a great sounding little amp w/ a lower wattage, that would be ok too.
thanks, g

If you simply must have a combo, there are always the Peaveys, the Classic series and the Delta Blues.

Good values, especially used.

Note that the higher the wattage, the generally higher the idle noise, if this is a consideration for your studio use. People tend to overamp rather than underamp.

A white-board (or Machrone-mod green-board) Fender Blues Junior is a decent amp and plenty loud for anything short of gigging.

For the fairly obvious technical reasons, count me among the many engineers, techs and advanced users who feel that any tube amp over about 15WRMS belongs in a separate head.

Good luck with your search!

you definitely do not neet 50 watts. If it's for studio use, get a small 15 watter that gets along well with pedals you use...

You can crank it, mic it, play with it.
have fun.
