I agree with hasbeen.

I'm not so sure that I understand your reasoning for spending $1000-1500 on a recorder "primarily for fun and to help out friends' bands". That's a lot of money to spend as a favor to others...

Don't get me wrong PM, I make a bit of money when I record my friend's bands, but recording to me is almost like another instrument that I play and really enjoy. I'd think nothing of spending a couple grand on a good Taylor Acoustic, or nice Strat, if I "had" to have it, so I guess I don't see this pending purchase much differently.

But, you bring up an EXCELLENT point. "In for a penny, in for pound" and all that. I too have owned budget gear that I've been dissatisfied with, only to replace it with what I should have purchased in the first place. My experience with "just like a Tube Screamer" pedal comes to mind.

So, when the "toy budget" is ready, I'll be getting the HD24XR.
