Hi All,
I realise that this is most likely a question that has been answered 1000 times before but i have done a bit of research on this site and others and i still can't figure out which way to go. Was hoping someone could perhaps stop me from making a mistake or something before i pull the pin.

I am a guitarist and i already do a little bit of recording of my guitar work (electric only). I play mainly 80s stuff, think Van Halen, Dokken, Whitesnake etc... and that is the type of singing i am interested in. I am no singer ( I dabble in a bit of singstar), but i still want to record my vocals over music, which would later get replaced by a proper singer at the right time/place.

I use a toneport UX2 to record my guitar, i would like to use that for voice.
I am looking at spending around $100
I am thinking of getting a MXL v67 as:
i am wanting to record only vocals,
will be using it in a quiet room. with little or no interfering sound (quiet time when i am home alone)
I dont have any training and I have heart that condenser mics tend to flatter the singer
Other things to note is that perhaps my voice can get a little nasally in the high mid and above range. I am also interested in Shure or whatever other products someone might reccomend. I have thus far had a little difficulty hearing majour sound differences between the various different makes/models on offer.

thanks in advance!

...And i think i have put this in the wrong place. great start.

If your vocals are to be replaced by a 'proper singer', then it doesn't really matter which mike you use. However, if you've been thinking about getting a MXL v67, it is a respectable mike, and will give you pretty good results . . . even though it may not fix what you regard as problems with your voice.

Thanks for the reply gecko.
I see your point about the 'proper singer'. but i guess i would still like it to sound nice. I also realise that no microphone is going to make vocal issues sound good. but some may accentuate things and other may not.... maybe... i think...

BTW, awesome area of the world you live in. Took the spirit down from Melbourne last month and had a great time.

Condenser mics flatter the details. If you're looking to flatter a typical human voice, you might want to try a dynamic (used on vocals a whole lot more often than many people think -- due to marketing and videos I suppose).

Let me say that if it doesn't sound good with a SM58 it isn't going to sound good with an expensive condenser mic.

The important point is here "I have thus far had a little difficulty hearing majour sound differences between the various different makes/models on offer".

The more experience you have with the recording, the more your ears will be able to hear things that were previously missed. If you get a good deal on the MXL, then get it, use it and do the best you can.

If you have the opportunity to try out other mikes, then do so.

Eventually you will discover a mike that woorks best in combination with your voice.

And I agree . . . Tas is a wonderful place!

You just have to learn how to get the best results you can with what you have. Of course the opinion on what good results are and what sounds good will be very different depending on who's listening. Some folks can't help acting stuck up about shit. I had a UX2 many years ago and it pretty much sucks. But for now just do the best you can do and pick up as much knowledge along the way as you can store in your brain.

I use a UX2 as a portable interface, mainly because of the software and the USB power, I've always liked the results. Not nearly as good as my DMP3 but still usable.

I'd also recommend the MXL v67, for the price a great all rounder.

Damn, that's the second person I've replied to that's been banned. I think I'm cursed!

OK moresound, I'm just glad it wasn't me.

:)

By the way is this normal in here?

It happens from time to time :)

Sometimes no rhyme or reason. Other times you can just be talking friendly poop and your...............

I don't think Foul Phill was one of the more obvious banning choices... wonder what he did!

mighty thor... could be your mighty powers as a god... don't reply to any of my posts OK?

Sorry OP... I'm just posting here because it seems to be where the Australians are hanging out.... CFox and RayC and witzendoz will probably drop by soon as well... :D

I'd better say something about the topic at hand... don't know that particular mic but a lot of people give it a wrap... try getting hold of a decent dynamic as well... your local band should have several...
