Just wondering what to buy. I'm starting out and have been looking at the roland 2480 and a similar yamaha unit. The thing is in my searching I've read some bad points about the roland. I was also wondering about ADAT is it any better or worse? Any help for some experience guys would be greatly appriciated. I don't really want to go over $5000 bucks.

Hey, I was just starting out... (actually still am) and for christmas I got the Yamaha AW4416 ... its AWSOME... there is a lot that I am still trying to figure out on it but that is because I haven't put in the time... I think last time I was at guitar center they were on sale for about 2600 bucks... so far its been awsome!

Yo Don Mega & Goat:

Hey Mega: I got my 2816 at Full Compass for 1845!!!

Mega: Dial up the Yamaha site and register your 2816 and they will send you a free instructional video.

Goatman: You can get the 2816 and have many bucks left over to buy some nice monitors, mics, etc.

The Yamaha 2816 has GOOD sound and goes from 16 tracks to two stereo tracks directly burning its own CDR from the built in unit.

There are other units and some of them cost less and some cost more. Depends what you need to do.

Mega: Whatever you learn about the 2816, send to me and I'll do the same.

HOPE YOU READ PAGE 12 OF THE THICK MANUAL WHICH LAYS DOWN A SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE FOR THE 2816. If you start working on it and just flip the off switch off, you can whack out the hard drive and other funny things can happen.


I'm still reading the manual.

The tutorial manual is a Yamaha joke as is the "usual" thick manual.

Stay away from ADAT there becoming obsolete -- well eventully they will be, HARDDISK is the way to go, so the AW4416 is good, ((now look into if you need that many tracks or else you will be wasting your money))

you should concentrate of your gear: keyboard, guitars, drum machine whatever....

and take it from there ---- but a Alesis HDR or a Mackie MDR is around $2000, then get your mic AKG414 round $300 and your gear as I said. ADATS may be cheap now to get, but that's at your discretion, your call, but I wouldnt advise it.

If ADATs are going bye-bye, then what removable media are on the horizon to replace them? Sure, a fast hard drive is the way to go for capturing tracks, but once I want to move the data to a pro for mastering, I sure don't want to be popping hard drives around town.

Yo Wheelman:

I'm guessing the next big move in recording will be digital DVD systems; then, you can move your stuff real easy.

I've already seen some hi-tech Panasonic television gear that has it all: flat screen, VHS, DVD, CDR, etc.

So, I'm reasoning that DVD, since it can hold so much data, is coming soon and Yamaha will be right in there.
