I'm brand new to home recording and I just purchased a BR-1600 two days ago. This product was recommended for its simplicity (I am an absolute non-technical guy). Anyway - I've been playing around with it and now I'm ready to record my first rough song.

I'd like to start by laying down a 4 minute drum pattern. Problem is, I can't find anything in the manual about "recording" drums. There's lots of info on selecting drums, changing sounds, tempo, using drums as a guide to recroding, etc... but nothing on actually recording them. I have selected the drums I want and they play on tracks 15/16... but whenever I get ready to record, the red button on track one flashes. ARghh... how do I record the drums.

Also, is it possible to get a four beat count-in when recording?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

On the 1600, you record 'patterns' and then chain them together at the right measures using the arrangement editor. Once that is done, when you press start, the patterns will play in the order you arranged them. If all you want to do is 'record' those patterns, you need to go into Bounce mode (press the bounce button), select the stereo tracks you want to record TO, and then press play. The drums will play on 15/16, but be recorded (bounced) to whatever stereo pair you selected. If the drums arrangement doesn't play properly, mess the the track button on 15/16 by pressing it...i think it toggles through 2-3 different modes (mute, pattern play, and arrange play).

As far as the count in, you could create a one measure pattern that has whatever drum sound you want to hear for counting in, and place that in front of the real patterns. I usually start my songs at measure 3, so you could use 1-2 as countin's.

The drum are 'wave' files so you don't have to 'record them to have them show up in the final mix. The blinking light on track 15/16 tells what drum mode you're, to hear a pattern, the button stays lit, and to have the drum pattern start when you record, the light should be blinking.
