Newbie synth guy.

I just picked up a m-audio controler, to get started in the world of electronic sound manipulation. I am a novice with what to do with this thing.

I basically wanted to track some sweet strings, like cello ect, to some songs that I tracked already, and wondered if anybody had any advice on good samples, and programs that hopefully won't break the bank.

Before you take the leap and purchase some expensive softsynths, i would spend some time on exploring some of the cheaper(read=free) options at your disposal.
