Newbie recording

Hi, I'm a newbie to the forum. Glad to be here, welcome any feedback.

I have a simple little recording setup. Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 > Sonar Cakewalk X3. For this recording I used a Sure Beta58 to record the vocals and a Sure 57 to record the guitar and micd the amp with the 57 for the electric guitar as well. I think I got a decently clean recording. I put the cakewalk compressor on all the tracks, but didn't fidget much with the controls. I'm pretty happy with how the recording sounds, but it seems like I could get move the sound into a wider spectrum - perhaps using EQ? maybe even a little reverb? I want to try to do some more effects processing on the tracks and then attempt to actually master it.

Any input on the mixing/effects is greatly appreciated.

Look forward to hearing some opinions and reading more of what this forum has to offer!

Even though you have compressors on the tracks, they are not doing anything. You should learn how to set them properly, and what they do. It does sound like a cool track though.
 
For your voice I would try to high pass at around 70hz, cut 1 or 2 db in the 300hz range, compress it with a 1176 style compressor around 4:1 of ratio and boost in the 15khz range with a pultech style Eq.
 
He has Sonar X3 so those pieces don't exist. I use X2 still. I bought the CA2A plugin (Compressor) with the Concrete Limiter (Mastering) in a package from Cakewalk. Really made a nice improvement in overall results. And simple to use.
 
Excellent, it has a very honest and unprocessed sound, and is very well performed.

I like the treatments but they are almost too dry. I quite like the double bits on the vocal, but I'm not sure they sit well in an otherwise dry mix. It's very unusual for me to say that perhaps this needs some experimentation with reverb (just some light ambience in places).

Edit: I try not to read commentary before listening and commenting, but I agree with your thoughts about creating more space.
 
I really liked the song and the performance. Good job.

I liked the acoustic guitar sound. A bit boxy, but it worked well in this mix.

I didn't care for the doubled vocal. I almost never say that. But this is a simple, bare-bones song. It works well that way, so keep it simple.

The vocal and the guitar sound like they're in different spots. The vocal sounds much closer than the guitar.

Vocal might improved by a small cut somewhere around 400-500hz I think. Just a hint of cloudiness. If the cut makes the vocal harsh, then remove the cut and live with it. :)

You have sung it very well.

Maybe post it in the mix it section and someone can mix it well.

And I think you need to put a high pass filter to match the clarity of the voice to your guitar. You can work on around 175-300 area to unmuddy it a bit. And as someone says the compressor doesn't seem to be kicking in. Try some reverb too. Great job for the first recording!
 
I quite like the sound of the vocal but it seems as if your mouth move to & from the mic quite a bit - you might automate the faders to address taht. The 2nd vocal is too loud - pull it back and slowly raise it until it's JUST there.
