hi,

i am sure this has been asked many times before but i will give it a shot anyways....

i am about to start recording on my pc. i was planning on getting the detla 44 and the audio buddy (for a preamp). i was also thinking about going the firewire route. if i go that way can i avoid getting the audio buddy preamp? i would like to go that way because it's seems to be cheaper.

thanks

A lot of firewire interfaces have mic preamps built in. For example, the Presonus Firepod has 8 of them. It's $600 just about anywhere. There are others as well.

What's your budget like?

BTW, welcome to the board! :D

thanks for the welcome. my budget is very small, like under $300. i just want to record some good sounding tunes. my friend has the above set-up and his stuff sounds great.

I have one of these --- LINK --- and I love it.

If you don't need midi you could get away with one of these. They use firewire and can be cascaded, meaning you can buy them one at a time and graft a multi-input system as your setup and budget grow...

so with either of those two above i wouldn't need a preamp, correct?

also, my friend has to use an old reciever as a monitor, how can i avoid that?

Correct about the preamp. Each of those sscientist listed has 2 microphone preamps.

The monitors, unfortunately, can turn out to be a high-dollar item. Most people here recommend you spend at least $350 on powered monitors to get something fairly reasonable-sounding.

And, of course, there's room treatment, microphones, cables, microphone stands....

All kinds of things to spend money on. :D

if i wanted to stay the cheap route i can just use my headphones or my computer speakers ( i know they won't sound so good but they will work for the time being), right?

For the time being, anything is better than nothing, but I would strongly recommend saving up and getting some good monitors before you try to do anything serious, i.e., something you would want to shop around as a demo or produce for sale. For getting ideas down and playing and getting to know your software, your computer speakers should work OK. Not great, but OK.

Training your ears by listening to some commercial CDs in the style of your music before doing any mixing or eqing would help to see how your setup sounds. That will enable you to do a better job of anticipating how it will sound on regular stereos.

would i be albe to plug my pod directly into this and a mic using 1/4' inputs all without an additional preamp?
