Hi -- I am just starting out and trying to learn to mix with the console view and create mp3's. I seem to have no trouble creating a .wav file with all tracks, but when I try to export an mp3, only one track comes thru. The problem is probably very, very basic I'm thinking.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

With the software version that I have, at least, it is not possible to mix down tracks and export to .mp3 at the same time. I have to do the two things, separately. First, I mix down (bounce to track) to a .wav file (default software format). I cannot mix (bounce) directly to an .mp3. Then export that .wav file to an .mp3 file. Two steps.

Thanks. Could you take me thru how you export the .wav to an mp3? I haven't figured that out yet.

Which version are you running? Unless you picked up an additional encoder, I didn't think most versions burned mp3. You may have a demo encoder enticing you to buy. It's usually been an additional pay option in SONAR.

Although, you can run LAME which is a better encoder than the Cakewalk version and, best of all, it's free.

I'm running Sonar Home Studio 6. Not sure if there's a more specific version name but I don't see one.

Could you tell me more about encoders, especially LAME--how to get and how to use it -- I often find freeware to be difficult to use if one does not already know the ins and outs of the software.

Thanks much,
Joe

Actually I looked up LAME on Wikipedia and got the general idea. I tried downloading it, but I got a message saying I needed to purchase WinZip for $29. This is similar to other experiences I've had trying to use free stuff...

So, please tell me about encoders I pay for, or how to get real LAME without paying for it.

Or, maybe I should be talking to Sonar tech support come to think of it, though I haven't registered yet -- I think this version is supposed to burn mp3's?!?

Thanks very much,
Joe

WinZip is just a piece of software used to open a compressed file, such as a .zip file or a .rar file. Download the Winrar trial at www.rarlabs.com and that will open both file formats. It is a perpetual trial that just makes you close a box that pops up whenever you start it. It's a solid piece of software.

cool thanks. That's good to know.

Meanwhile I solved the mp3 mystery. Following the directions in the Sonar guide or book was useless. I just needed to talk to someone in realtime who uses Sonar and he told me what the problem was: I needed to highlight all the tracks! Here I was futzing with various parameters in the console view, and as I suspected the problem was much more basic and bone-headed. Why do instructions in manuals never work??? Sure I'm an idiot, but there are a lot of us out there and somehow we figure out how to use word processors.

-end rant- :)

Best,
Joe
