Hi, :)

I am new to home recording and i am trying to learn how to make my own vocal cd from home. I have a karaoke system and i want to sing songs and make a cd of my voice for family and friends.

Can someone tell me what equipment i would need to buy to do this. Do i have to use a computer and software if i am just going to be singing using my karaoke system and karaoke cd's.

I will not be playing any instruments. Another words what i'm asking is there a recording system you buy where you sing from your karaoke into the recording system and it makes your cd, or is there other steps involved? Any help much appreciated. Thanks Sadie.

This would depend on your budget, it could be as simple as going direct into a stand alone cd-burner(as long as you had some sort of blend knob) but your vocals would be dry and you might not like that. Or a simple audio interface and basic recording software(most audio interfaces come with something) and you could then make adjustments on your computer.

My obligatory standard reply that I keep in Wordpad:

Immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio:
Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15

(Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief)

I agree that you have to read some books. My advice is to get "Guerrilla Home Recording : How to Get Great Sound from Any Studio (no matter how weird and cheap your gear is)" It's a good point to start, it will help you to understand the recording process.

Well, my advice to record vocals is to AVOID BEHRINGER crap. Use a Shure SM58 for vocals, a Naddy pop Filter and an isolated room. Add reverb in the mix and voilà. I forgot, use a mic preamp before going to the computer. You can get more sophisticated but I think you will do well with a simple setting.

And read the book.
