newbie on recording

hiya i am new to this whole kind of recording stuff
my friend and i both play electric guitar and wanna record ourselves directly onto my laptop using a microphone so we can send our friends mp3's or whatever of us playing. i am buying a microphone 2morrow, is there anything i should look for? and what program do i use. can i download 1 from the net. thanks. guitargirl

If you play electric, I would take a look at the Line6 guitar port. Otherwise, all you need is some basic recording software like cakewalk guitar tracks, and a somewhat decent mic never hurts. You can use your existing sound card for a while, but if you get heavy into recording chances are you will upgrade.

your gonna need a preamp for that mic and the cables to convert it if your going direct to your soundcard. (unless your getting one of those cheapo radio shack mics with the 1/8" plug)
