Newbie needs Monitor advice!

Hi, all.
Setting up a home Protools/iMac studio and need some inexpensive but decent monitors -- my producer says that's the most important element at this point, before any bells and whistles. Looking at Behringer Truths, but concerned about RF and also have heard some folks say they aren't all that audio-wise. Also wondering about the Alesis or ...

Unfortunately we're not able to get to the city to listen, so I'd be much obliged by any opinions or advice you could offer. Looking for something that reveals the bitter truth...

The project is an alternative country singer/songwriter with basic rock 4-piece plus fiddle, piano, dobro and banjo, if that matters... my engineer/producer is an old-school analog fellow who produced great records back in the day (c. 1980) but is a ProTools newbie (though he's a Mac maven), so all this new stuff is a brave new world to him.

We'll be buying on eBay probably, so are looking at decent used equipment as well. Are the Yamaha MSP5 better than the Truths? What about the old NS10s? What's the diff between Behringer Truth 2030, 2031 and 2031a, and is the $ worth the diff? I've also heard Alesis is good... any likely models?

I know this is problematic at best to buy without hearing, so I do appreciate any info you might offer. Thanks so much!

Cal: Putting my fragile levity aside, I would say you don't want Alesis speakers--Alesis makes some good products but they have never set the speaker world on fire with their monitors.

I'd look at the KRK line--I had a pair of passives and they worked fine until I upgraded to Events which I will upgrade to Adam monitors. For the dollars for KRKs, you can buy new from a vendor and avoid getting speakers with beer spilled in them on Ebay.

Ask the vendors you call on 800 what their "RETURN" policy is. Most charge for restocking and you have to pay the shipping which is expensive; best to be somewhat sure before you order.

There are several vendors who all have 800 numbers. I've had good luck and good service from Full Compass and Sweetwater Sound, as well as others.

When you mentioned the old NS10s, I was thinking you should look into some HS80Ms instead. I'm having GREAT luck with them and am very happy with the purchase.

Ah, the Calabama stars are bright. Actually, a not-so-affectionate name for rural NorCal... we love it here despite itself.

i'd stay away from anything that says berhinger on it. i've had KRK RP5's. they're pretty decent. for you, i'd recommend the RP6's
