I have an unfinished ceiling I plan to drywall. I intend on using two layers of 1/2 inch drywall. I need to know how to install recessed lighting. Most cans allow for 1/2 drywall between the ring and the can. I suppose I could make a bigger diameter hole in the top most layer of the drywall.

I want to share a link of the lights I intend to use. This site wont let me.

PLease advise on any lighting ideas you might have.

See if there are any "cans" that can be purchased that allow for 1"+ between ring and can.
They may cost a bit more but......................... :)

I've seen them with adjustable depth rings -- Couldn't tell you where, but they're out there... Somewhere...

I'm sure they are.
When my studio room was rebuilt, I used 2 layers of drywall throughout and the contractor used the same cans he did in the other rooms in the basement.

Hmm, two layers huh? This suggests you are trying to improve the Transmission Loss in the ceiling...ie..."soundproofing"...which by all intents and purposes is a misnomer. However, UNLESS you ARE trying to ..ahem.."soundproof" your space, what's the point of using two layers...only to mitigate the TL performance by PENETRATING the mass with holes big enough to totally negate the purpose of the drywall in the first place.

In that regard...IF you indeed are trying to improve the sound transmission to other spaces, then do NOT penetrate the drywall for installing lighting fixtures. Surface mount fixtures, with either surface mount metal wiring channels or using flush mount J-boxes with approved "putty packs" surrounding them is the preferred method for rooms that are designed with Transmission Loss in mind. Otherwise...you are defeating the purpose of TWO layers as a mass boundary.

One other thing. Unless the rest of the boundaries(ie..walls, doors, windows, floor) match the TL of your proposed ceiling..well, they become a "weak link", and therefore also negate all your hard work and money.
