need some knowledge about typical mixer consoles found in small to medium sized rock clubs....i'm going to try my hand at recording using a multitrack and i need to know what type of outputs the majority of the consoles that have direct outputs have...i plan on having 1/4" & rca snakes but will i possibly need a snake with XLR ends? if so will i need male or female? thanks. -jc

Mixing consoles found in clubs are for live performance and not good for recording.
Look into Behringer or Yamaha. The Yamaha MG series is pretty popular with the folks on here. They both come in different configurations, have phantom power for condensor mics, and good pre amps. There are those who will berate the Behringer mixers, but they are cheaper than most others out there, and not really all that bad, depending on who you talk to.
They also have 1/4" and XLR connections.
Hope this was helpful...

I mostly see 1/4 inch. I only remember seeing xlr once, about 20 years ago, on an old (at the time) console. You would have needed a female xlr to attach to it.

Female XLR for input side and male for output side.... But most common now is 1/4" jacks...

thanks for your help!

>>Mixing consoles found in clubs are for live performance and not good for recording.<< i thought that if you patched from the diect outs (not from busses) that the board has no effect on the signal. i dont plan on xing in the field unless they run an obnoxious amount of mics on the drums and in that case i'll mix them down to a stereo feed with my own mixer.

It really depends on the venue. Some places will have a Mackie 1606, some will have an Allen Heath. Your results will vary with the console.
