newbie mic selection.....

Oh, and by the way, I have a C3 and a couple B1's. I do not think that they sound thin.

You have to remember that all mics sound different in different rooms and on different sources (or voices.) My C3 sounds great on the two other guys I record, but not so great on me. I sound a bit better (to me) through the B1. I am also learning that how far away from the mic I am can change sounds a lot too. I originally hated my Senn 421 on my voice, but the more I work with it, the more I am starting to like it.

It is almost impossible to buy a mic based on web info like this. I think it is even though for a beginner (like you, and me) to know if a mic is good for us within a few days.

Get some mics and start making music. Keep saving and someday you will dump mics you do not use anymore and buy some new mic that better suits your voice.

for god's sakes.......

THANK YOU

all i was looking for was some comprehensive info to help me decide.....THANKS

i peeped the faq but i didnt see any info on preamps - and i just bought that 'home recording for dummies' book and was reading it last night and saw some info on preamps.

it said that alot of digital recorders have them - but when i ck'd the specs on mine i didnt see that listed. ( maybe its so common its not itemized as a feature? ) i dunno...

but i also asked the guys at the trusty local 'guitar center' ( i hate those mcdonald like chain type places ) but the guy broke it down to me ( somewhat ) as far as what a preamp is and what it does. but he made a good point - he said that many digital recorders have phantom power but will not supply the full power the mic may require - so a preamp is a good idea. i mean i just wanna make sure i have what i need to make music

but one suggestion u made that i like that was also in the book i bought was to buy two different mics - and i have been hearing/reading good stuff about that shure mic

but for goodness sakes thanks for the straightforward reply - thats all i was looking for

That is GC stuff is crap. You current rig will give your mic's plenty of power. The $300 garbage they will want to sell you there will provide no significant improvement to what you have now.

Spend you dough (for now) on nice mics, and yes, I would also recommend two different ones. The Shure sm57 is at every studio in the world. You should definately buy one of those and then pick another different kind of mic for the other.

If you really want to learn a load about the different types of mics and their applications read this: http://www.homerecording.org/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27030

It is damn long, but you can learn a lot. There are a lot of people who chime in with newbie type questions and you can read the answers.

Get your two mics and start making some music!
