newbie mic selection.....

the choices are dizzying and this is all so new to me so i never kno where to start.............

i only want to spend about $100.oo or less on a condenser mic -

( i actually will be buying two - there are two vocalist in the group - so $100.oo each )

and i was all set to buy the behringer b-1 after reading the post on mic's in here - but i went to sam ash and they "claim" that berhringer was no good and i should either get the samson C03

f.y.i. we are a hip hop act - so we'll be recording rap-like vocals.......im just starting out and have a limited budget and wanted to get a half way decent mic for crisp clear vocals. after peeking at the samson model im a bit partial to it because i like the feature to switch patterns for different sounds...........what do u guys suggest? i dont really trust those clowns at sam ash - they just want to make a sale on what they have in stock at the moment.........

anyway please help me out. like i said i was convinced on the behringer product but now im not sure..........

uh - man im really basic with it right now

i dont have any of that - just a digital recorder and an mpc right now..........just starting out with it

While I agree SamAsh is filled with idiots and is run like crap - you are lucky they told you that the Behringer B1 is junk - it basically is. What is usually touted in these forums is the Studio Projects B1 - totally different microphone. I think you need to do a bunch of reading before you decide what to get (not alot of posting - alot of reading).

i thought the behringer b-1 and the studio projects b-1 was the same thing - my bad then.

so what's up - u think thats better than the other two i was looking at? im looking at it online right now - it $20 cheaper - thats for sure

i just found this review of the mic online - i dont like how this sounds.....

"I found the B1 to excel at two things: Mic'ing acoustic instruments and guitar amps. I've tried the B1 on several male and female voices in the context of singing and spoken word. I've never liked the results. As one of my production collaborators says: "It sounds thin and I hear a little distortion." However, on acoustic instruments and guitar amps, the same B1 takes the source and puts it across similar to how it sounds in the room."

i dont wanna sound 'thin' on the mic........but this is just one guys opinon i guess. how does his analysis hold up?

Do you have phantom power? If you dont know, you better find out. Do you know what phantom power is? If you dont, do a search and learn
I dont know if a B1 would work good for you. I dont use one for recording hiphop or rock lyrics. Itll prolly suit your tastes just fine though..
How bout a Marshall V67?

yeah i have phantom power - and yeah i kno u aren't my decision maker - just looking for opinions - which i will weigh with my own and make a decision. if everyone says yay or nay then that sort of helps me out........

do u ( or does anyone reading ) kno anything about this b-1 mic as far as recording vocals in comparison to the samson and the marshall.

btw i read the forum on the mics being confused.......thanx
 
i recieved my studio projects b1 today, very pleased with it, but i did acoustic recording with it...i started some vocals on it and its not bad at all, i personally believe that you wont get a better condenser for the price and all around usage...its excellent with micing acoustics and pretty good on vocals...ive heard alot bad from behringer, clanky, cheap, magnifies cheap equip...man for the price and overall usage id go with the studio projects, but im not quite as expierence with some of the folks in here, so you might want to get a few more opinions...thats my opinion!

They are implying that if you read the FAQ that you would know what a preamp is. You have a preamp if you have a digital recorder with phantom power.

I am not you, but here is what I would suggest. Get one Studio Projects B1 (I would suggest the B3 because of the pattern selector and the options it will give you moving forward.) Then get a Shure SM57.

Together these two will be under $200 (or close.) The SP B3 will sound pleasing to you and the SM57 will give you another option and last you forever.
