Welcome! What's your setup? What are your goals? What instruments do you play?

Thanks!! I currently do not have a setup, as I am still deciding which way to go. My goal is to record guitar amp / cabinets that I build (possibly for marketing). I am not a great guitar player, so my plan is to loan them out to great players letting them get familiar with them - then track some recordings.

That's awesome! So you want to make demo videos for your amps? or you want to see them put to use to make albums? or both?

You certainly don't need a $3000 mic and preamp for doing such comparisons. There are tons of comparison videos on Youtube that are made with far more common gear.

I recently watched a video where a signal was run through loopback and it took in most cases over a hundred decode/encode cycles to even detect a difference. Adding to that places like Youtube then run the audio through a compression algorithm and you've lost any possible trace of that thousand dollar preamp.

A Shure 57 and a moderately priced ribbon mic, tracked indivifually or together, should cover a fairly wide base of amp-miking needs.
Those are used a lot for that purpose.

Good Luck with your amp venture; let us know if you want more help.

C.
