Newbie Here...need a little help

Im a newbie, using Wavelab 4.0 w/ Waves Native plugins.

Right now im messing around with my band's recordings, trying to master everything for a CD.

My biggest problem has been trying to bring out the "punch" in the kick drum. Id like to bringout the bottom-end without increasing the ditortion level. I realize every recording/mix/etc is different, but what would i need to in order to bring the kick drum out in the final master?

wish i could, the adat's have been taped over, any other suggestions?
 
well, its too late to do it right but you might be able to make it "better"

if you have the C4 plug from waves, open an instance of it.

Solo the second band from the left

move the hi and lo pass filters left and right till you pretty much dial the kick in, so that its mostly all you hear

set ratio to 3:1 or whatever they call it on that plug

set attack to 80mS

use a tap tempo tool or measure in an editor or whatever, but set the release to just before the "1" of the next measure

start lowering the threshold till the bass guitar and whatever else is hanging around those frequencies starts to turn down...keep going until the kick JUST starts to go away

back it off a bit and turn UP that band by 3 dB

thats a start, dial it in from there...but next time...you know....DONT tape over your recordings...ADAT tape is cheap!
 
One thing I've seen happen a lot is that when people compress, limit, or normalize to get the CD louder they cut too much peak information and the kick gets "lost". Try using a multiband compressor and do not compress the low end as much as the mids and highs.
 
Yeah, let me second that "don't tape over" bit. Always keep an archive of the multitrack stuff, 'cause you just never know.
