Details about my setup:

Cakewalk 9.0
Tascam TM-D1000
Gina 16 Bit soundcard
Using SPDIF

Channel 4: Analog Mic
Channel 5-6: Stereo input of Fender Strat
Channel 7-8: Stereo pair of Roland Keyboard.

Not sure where to start however my challenge is to be able to monitor a pre-recorded track (from Cakewalk) while playing an instrument to lay down to another track. Whenever I play anything back from cakewalk, I am unable to monitor it with board unless I'm using the EXT "patch". This doesn't help me if I want to add any instruments that are patched into the mixer.

How would I set this up. I know there are many variables to consider but I don't know which ones to begin looking at. So if there are any patient experts out there that could ask me the right questions, I'm all ears.

If I understand correctly, your soundcard has SPDIF out?

If so, you can take that SPDIF out of the soundcard and plug it into your SPDIF in on the TMD-1000. Now, decide which pair of channels you want to bring the cakewalk sounds in on (looks like you have 1 & 2 available) Now, here is the tricky part, because I don't have the TMD-1000 manual in front of me - look up how to route input signals - the manual does indeed cover it - I know I read it in there because I was trying to do the same thing about 2 years ago - the manual will tell you what buttons to push, just follow the directions. Basically, you will be telling the mixer to route incoming SPDIF to whatever pair of channels you decide on. At that point, you will not have to have EXT input selector engaged - you should be able to hear your cakewalk sounds along with your other instruments you have going into other channels.

Hope this helps. If you don't have a manual, or can't find what I am talking about, let me know and I will dig out my manual and find the exact button pushing sequence and post it here for you.

Also, one more thing -

Check the literature on your Gina - if that SPDIF out has 24 bit capability, you will want to move your Roland keyboard off of channels 7 & 8 and bring your SPDIF signal in on 7 & 8 - those two channels are set up to receive and convert 24 bit audio on the TMD-1000, if I am not mistaken.

Hmmm...

This sounds like it will put me on the right track. (Excuse the terrible pun...) This is an old Gina card so it doesn't have 24 bit capability. I'm guessing it is the legacy 20 bit card (I bought it over three years ago, if not longer.) I can't seem to find the manual but I'm sure there must be one floating aroundin PDF format. If you could tell me which page then hopefully, I'll be able to figure it out.

I know the SPDIF is outputting a signal because I can see it in the Gina console in windows. Every time I snap my fingers, I can see it register. Getting it to emit from a point from the mixer is where I'm having the difficulty and I'm hoping I can monitor it as well.

Can you think of where in the manual this might be?

I am at work right now, but when I get home tonight (around 6:30 Pacific time), I will find the manual and post back here...

But if you find the manual online in PDF, let me know where to go to see/download it, and I will find it in there for you.

Okay, in the TMD-1000 Operations manual, page 14, section 5.4 Connecting a Digital Audio Source.

It doesn't mention a computer being the sound source - but it works, that is how I have mine set up.

Anyway, that should do the trick.

You might want to look into purchasing a Tascam 822PCI soundcard (or another manufacturers equivalent). It is a TDIF cable (which is a bi-directional digital cable).

That would enable you to send tracks to and from the computer on tracks 9 - 16, while you record on tracks 1 - 8.
