can someone please tell me why everyone likes the shure sm57? i've tried to use it to get a good sound from my amp and it always comes out muddy. i thought it was supposed to be a good mic.

what amp is it? how are you micing it? what's the rest of the signal chain?

the sm57 is a good mic. that's pretty much a given. there's got to be something wrong somewhere else.

Aim them off axis you will get mudd from aiming them on center of the speaker.

small fender blues jr
i face the mic to the cone but i did try a few different positions and it changed but it was still muddy
mic goes into an art tube mp
i record to an adat LX20
when i do vocals it sounds ok but not great

i want to get a clean funk sound like red hot chile peppers blood sugar sex magic

That might be your problem. I've never had any trouble with mine, but I've heard many a horror story from others who report that theirs sound somewhat murky. Mileage definitely varies with that thing. At least make sure you're not driving the toob too hard. Crank your output gain but go easy on the input gain.

Another thing to think about is proximity effect from close-micing. The bass will always be exaggerated when you mic it up close, no matter what mic you use. Try backing it up a foot or two. Also try cutting some bass on your amp to compensate.

Room accoustics also play a role, so be mindful of where the amp is placed in relation to the room, and what kind of sound-deadening you use.

Don't we all.

There's no right or wrong with mic choices. If you don't like the results you are getting with an SM57, feel free to try a condenser mic and see if that works better for the sound you are going for.

I recorded a pretty good blues/slide player on a Blues Junior with a 57 and it came out pretty nice. I even used some of my condensors just for kicks but they didnt really add much to it.

The Blues Junior is a cool little amp but it is a little bit muddy sounding by itself. Cut the bass almost all the way, boost the highs and DO NOT use that worthless FAT button. Adjust the amp EQ while listening through your monitors. It might sound too high and thin in the room but it could be a lot warmer once it gets to the recorder. Use less distortion than you think you need.

thanks for the advice everyone

i'll give it a try and let you know how it went

Then you'd better be recording the Red Hot Chili Peppers.... otherwise you aren't going to get their sound!

i was wondering when the know-it-alls and gear snobs were going to come out

i've been on these forums before and know your type

thanks for the 'useful' info

Bruce, listen, flaunting your gear so snobbishly is really not acceptab... hey, wait a minute...

Listen 5 past 9, lay off. If you've "been on these forums before," as you say, you'd think you'd know when to pick an unnecessary battle, especially with someone you recognize as a person who speaks bluntly, as well as often.

Frankly I am sick and tired of all the "Bruce is a [insert slang term here]" posts, especially by people who say they have seen him post in the past yet can't seem to find anything useful in them. This has been beaten to death, and people keep jumping on Blue Bear. Really, what Blue Bear said is right on. No matter if your a hack or a virtuoso, you aren't gonna get the same sound as RHCP or any other band, regardless of gear make, model, shape or size.

You said you're a newbie, well act like one moron. Show a little respect for the people who contribute to this forum. Newbie shouldn't always mean dumbass, but guys like you sure make it seem that way.

Besides, bruce is so cuddly...

Hey Mr. Minnow...

shut the crap up....eh? is this your battle? do minnows really go to battle?

jeez...gimme a hook and a worm.... even a net!!

frankly, I'm sick and tired of people defending azure colored mammels, and think that green fish are even grosser...

so...go swim upstream and get clawed by a bear...eh?

Frankly, I've had just about enough of all this jumping all over minnows who jump all over clueless newbs for jumping on bears who jump on clueless newbs crap.

This has got to stop.

And you don't have to be the band to sound like that band! Look at Beatlemania (sound just like the damn Beatles to me), or all the damn rappers and boy bands who all sound just like one another!

Wait a minute . . . I'm getting way out of line here. I've had just about enough of myself.

How about if I just kick myself in the ass and save everyone else the trouble?

"Gear" Snob?

And, uh ... there wasn't any "gear" even mentioned in the "gear snob's" post.

Maybe he's a "talent snob"? But I guess that would actually be the opposite of a gear snob.

"There's no piece of magic gear that will make Joe Blow and pals sound like the Red Hot Chili Peppers" (for those who are slightly thick, that was the implication of his post) doesn't sound like "gear snobbery" to me.

Try holding an RE-20 with your hand covering all the side openings. Sing "Love Roller Coaster." Oops, an RE-20 costs more than $100. Is that gear snobbery?

geez - all i did was ask a question and got some good answers

i didn't want to start a war. i just didn't think blue bear sound's answer was very helpful.

you people are a tense bunch

Hey Bruce,

They got ya figured out man. Time to change yer tactics.

It sure looks like these guys (this guy) are/is just waiting for you to post one of your patented smart-ass comments (no offense guy, I like 'em).

I haven't been here all that long but I've seen this scenario play out before...ya know?

Regards/respect,

lou

You need a thicker skin if you're going to hang on these forums (and you should - this place is an excellent resource and it sounds like you could use it).........
