new user with an ADAT connection question

I just bought an adat and I am trying to decide on a mixer. My question is: Can you use the insert jacks on a mixer (individual channels) to connect into the ins and outs of the adat? If I am not recording on the track would it play back through the mixer via the insert cable? Could I eq the signal coming back through? Or is my thinking all screwed up. I have an 8 channel insert snake. I dont want to spend the money for an 8 buss mixer.

The best way to see if these things will work is to try them.....

You could possibly do what you described, but you may run into some troubles is the insert winds up looping the input to ouput. A patch bay may be in order here...
