New USB Harddrive

OK, I just got a Western digital 120GB external harddrive!


I am curious as to how I go about moving my recording software (Sony Vegas 5.0) and all my music folders to this drive?

I am a newbie at computers, so bear with the stupid question.

It's already FAT32, and installed and ready to go (formatted already). There is nothing on it. I just want to be able to do all my recording stuff from it and leave my pc for mundane stuff like email, hanging out in here, etc.


Help! I have no idea how to do this without screwing things up. I don't want to have to reinstall the software on the drive, but if that's the only way to move it I will...
 
make a backup of your music files...

Uninstall Vegas from your cpu.

Run a Reinstall in custom or advanced mode.

When the software asks what location you want to put the software choose your new drive.

Then cut/paste your music folder(s) to the new drive.

Try running the app and some of your projects (The program may ask for the location of your files just select the folder on the new drive).

Thanks! I didn't want to have to do it that way, but if that's the only way it will work, then I am going to get on it right away!

Well the other way involves changes settings in the registry moving a bunch of folders and doesn't always work because alot of times you miss a registry file because it is encrypted. So yea i think the other way is safer and easier. :D

I'm going to give it a shot. The problem is that I don't have the registration numbers. Well, I do, but I dont' know where I put it (it's not in the CD case), so I may be screwed that way. I could always just use the program on the cpu and just use the harddrive that way... but that seems like a waste. I want to be able to take it with me and mix when I am sailing next year...

I'll give it a go and let you know what happens...
 
BigWillz, it worked slicker than snot. I found my registry numbers under the CD when I took it out. All set up and running like a champ! It recognized the music folders in the new location no problem!

I owe you some rep points as soon as it lets me! :D
 
Just a warning - You mentioned you'd like to take the external drive and hook it into another PC on the road and use all the software you loaded on the external drive. I don't think this would work because
1)The installation is most likely tied very tightly to the OS you installed on your main PC
2)The registry resides on the drive that the OS is installed in, you when you put the external drive on another machine, the SW will look for the registry entries which won't be in the new PC's registry.

I think you might have just done all this work for naught. Also, you shouldn't be running any demanding software off of an external drive, which is slower than an internal running off the IDE bus.
 
gordone makes some good points. I use a Western Digital external to record onto (mine's FireWire so it's nice and fast) but I think having Vegas on there will cause problems, especially because of the way you have to register the software. The computer ID is based on the CPU and is unique for each computer. You might get issues trying to run the software from a different CPU.
 
Yep, I don't think it will work because of all the "bits" of the program that get put into the windows directory of your C:\ drive as well.........

What you could do is put windows on the external HDD and set up a dual boot system on every pc you attach that hdd to - not that I would recommend that - :D
 
All folks are giving you great advice. Don't ever put the program on the external harddrive. The harddrive is only for your song files, or video filed, or other such files which are huge. Over time, large files like that will wear out your computer's "c" drive. This is the reason we are supposed to put our music files on an ext. harddrive.
 
I'll second (fourth?) the not putting the program on your external drive. The chances of you plugin and playing on a different computer is pretty much nil. You can try copying the contents of you install CD on there and install the program each time you use a new computer. Generally DAW programs are much happier using a seperate drive for audio files than the drive the program itself is running from.
 
I'll take that into account. I may rethink the whole process.
I can easily reinstall it on my pc, so that won't be an issue. In fact, I will do that today.

All done. I put the program back on my pc's harddrive and just have the audio files on the external. Lots of space. I now have 220GB of harddrive space!
