New tune with bad cymbals!

Hi folks,

I posted this last night over at recproject.com, so if you saw it there, ignore me now.

Just thought I'd gather some thoughts. I will leave out the long windedness for now, but the other thread is at this link...if you want to read it

Chris Harris thinks my posts are unbearably long, so if you feel like reading any thoughts I had or others had, you can check it out there. You could listen from that page as well, or you can go directly to my Nowhere page and listen instead...
I Remember It's track 4. The rest is old.

If you have the time, I'd appreciate it. If not, I certainly understand--I'm not notorious for saying a whole lot in this forum myself, but it's all cause you guys are better than me. :mad:

(Edit: I have not edited any of it yet. There is a big throat clear at the end, and I haven't even attempted a true mix. Some vocal issues in places too, but that can be fixed! I just wrote it and wanted to get something on tape this weekend. So, there's my only disclaimer. Now, egg and tomato me. I've got my trash bag on in waiting.)

Your vocal sucked me right in with this one. Mesmerizing.

The use of the strings is great also.

Now, that is pretty funny!!!!!! Thanks for the laugh, and the listens you guys. So far, I have a couple of votes to keep the strings, and one or two to lose them. It's funny, but they seem to come in a measure behind where I started recording them, but I also noticed that they seem to become more noticeable later on, though there is not one volume change there. Maybe also because I started with one line, then later on doubled up for some cross of a second part counter-melody/part harmony line. Most people hate the cymbals...I can easily live without so many of them. I think there should be still one or two laying around there somewhere. I try using kick sometimes, but a)my timing is never right, and b)I'm guessing it needs some bass along with it to make it blend in to the music a bit more. I am afraid of bass lines much in the way that one would be afraid of a known serial killer. Well, maybe not THAT afraid.:p

Well, I'm back to work. I can't sit around here posting all day long. (As if I don't already...ha ha.)

I played this several times today, and I actually took a shot at a playing some bass on it, but my initial thoughts over at RecPro were right...I can't improve your song.

Oh, and I forgot to vote for the cymbals...I really liked them...but maybe you could sell out and please everybody by just turning them down some.
 
Oh well, you had the 5 stars this deserves temporarily. Some gutless 1 star wanker is obviously deaf.
 
Nice job Kristen. Vox and piano sound great.

I'd like the cymbals better if you just kept a steady beat with them. A nice solid quarter beat with some swing would really help drive the song.

If you can't play a steady enough beat just get a good measure or two and loop like it the rest of us.

You have a wonderful voice, and the piano is perfect. I liked the strings too.

The cymbals don't do anything for me - I'd vote to lose them!

Nice song, too.

One slight comment on the voice (and bear in mind this is coming from me, and I really can't sing at all, so feel free to ignore it) - I'd like to hear just a wee bit less vibrato on some notes - it's just a touch too much for my taste. This is not a criticism - you have a great voice - but for me it would make the track even better.

Not something that I listen to but I did check it out.

I thought the voice was pretty good and I liked the piano. I think the cymbols either need a beat to go with them or just lose them all together, although they had a nice sound in a few spots, they just seemed to lose the timing in the piano or something?
 
Very nice vocals kgril, it reminds me of Aguilera a little bit if that makes sense, you know very diva-esque. Smooth, smooth track, it must've taken quite a bit of time to track.

Hey i don't have a problem with the cymbals, they sound ok here(editors note: there were no cymbals in the mix i heard). Clearing your voice at the end works for me, sounds funny.

I normally don't like tracks like this very much.. But i was sold the minute it started.

Very nice indeed.

About those cymbals, I think they can add to the track, but used in a more moderate fashion.

Gratz again on the singing... oh btw, what did you record those vocals with?

Alibish--definitely taking poll on the cymbals. If I don't lose them, the whole thing needs more definition, and maybe something else to drive the rhythm home. As for the vibrato...I've heard that before. That may be harder for me to work out, but I do know what you mean. Thanks to you.

Devilish--yes, I lost the beat. I hear it too. Will fix it soon. Thanks for checking me out!

Khompewter--I've been emailing you, but actually, I find the Aguilera comment a compliment, even if so many people seem to hate her. I don't care to see her perform or anything, but I like her voice, so I can't even complain about that! I'm not sure how you didn't hear cymbals...I only have one version out there. Hmmph. And, thanks for sending the post FOR me. You rock.

swoon--Thanks for listening even though you (like devilish) aren't into this stuff. Glad you like the vocals...it's the only thing I'm comfortable doing. Cymbals---agreeeeeeeeed. The vocals were T3>RNP, with RNC insert. Then, a software gate and extra compression. A lot of people told me I didn't need that T3, and I still probably don't. Someday, I actually need to compare all my mics and preamps against eachother. That's an A/B, I suppose.

Really lovely vocals and nice piano (what keyboard was used for this recording??) Good song too - heartfelt.

I say either lose the cymbals, or better yet add the rest of the drumkit!

I like the strings.
 
Very very good vocals - would you sing some of my songs? LOL

I like the way the piano comes out - did you record a real piano or is from a keyboard.

I'm thinking that you could probably lose the cymbal without losing any interest on the song - but I don't find it really distracting either. I vote yes for the strings, but maybe even more quietly at the end!
