New track of terror from The Boogiemen

pink...certainly...not what I was really expecting. The beginning was pretty cool, the the guitars came in and took back to the 70's....ala Uriah Heep with new synthesizers. I like it all fairly much, but the guitars don't sit well with me at all and trash the whole mix, with the reverb, grating sound, tinny EQ, etc. I dig the synth stuff.

Hey Pinky,

The tune kept my attention and I let it take me in. I found myself waiting for something to happen the whole time. That "something" never did yet, I I didn't feel cheated. I felt like I dug the song. So, logic would dictate that I did.....duhh...:D

I thought the lead distortion git could come up in the intro even though this is not a "showcase this track then that track" kinda song.

The little vocal blurb "Just when you thought...." works fine but, I thought the delivery was kinda banal. Maybe give it more of a psychotic vocal inflection............

Then the git is in there but maybe the tone is wrong. Less distortion? Maybe a different set of git effects alltogether.

That dirty ending doesn't work with the song at all. Kills any mood that built up while listening.

Hope my aural observations helped. Sorry I can't give more technically sound info.

Cool tune in the works. Hope it turns out as you desire.

Peace,

Theron.

Pinky,

This thread really caught my attention, as we have a band in the Milwaukee area called 'The Boogiemen' too. They're a pretty big attraction in this area, and do mostly disco type stuff. Here's their homepage. http://www.boogiemen.com/

Anyway, to comment on your song 'Stars'...It's got a good foundation and hook to it, but it does need to build to something more.

The recording seems a bit mushy sounding to me. Too much verb in general, and the bottom end is undefined (all rumble, no distinctness to it).

The vocal thing was a bit too loud, and almost scared me. ;) (Maybe that's what you were going for)

Keep working the song, clean up the recording a bit, and you'll be set!

Cool Tune!

Good mix of synth's and guitars I thought, mabey just a little cleaner on the gits.
The only thing I didn't think fit was the snare and rim shot sound,a little to loud.IMHO

Good groove,really rocks!

Best to you,
Pete

I had much the same feeling as mixmkr. The song has a good feel to it. But the guitars have a gratiness to them that hurts the song overall.

If they had a warmer tone to them, it would improve things considerably.

Musically... A four minute instrumental makes it a challenge to keep up listener interest. I thought things got just a little repetitive. You changed a few things up (different lead parts, drums drop out then come back, a spoken line, etc.), but in my view not quite enough to keep it lively. Some sections got a little long. Perhaps add different instruments and parts.

That's the first thing I tried attacking yesterday, should have heard them before :p .

So I'm going to reexamine the whole sound, the problems people pointed out here were the exact same things I don't like about the mix. I know how to get the guitars up (create a duplicate track re-EQ'd to bring up the lows and mids, add some chorus to warm-it-up). What I'm still uncertain about, another issue I addressed yesterday when laying down the bass line, is how to get it "cleaner"/more defined. That will be a challenge as I don't own a bass, it was an acoustic guitar with a line-in from the pickup ;). I have the original track, maybe I can start all over and un-muddy it after dropping the pitch...

As for structure and payoff, I have a classical part planned that may or may not actually work (SF Acid is tough to compose symphony :D )... was thinking of layering acoustic parts instead.

I have a tendency to create overly harsh guitar parts myself. Despite being told otherwise, I've tried in the past to correct it via EQing. It doesn't work well - to put it mildly. Sometimes I just have to find out the hard way. :)

I'm trying to get better at tracking them correctly in the first place.

Okay, I've uploaded a better version. Think I have more definition and less rumble on the bass (I like/intend for some rumbling, but not the degree there was), I added some mids/lows to the rhythm guitar part but duplicating a track and dropping it an octave, set it right along side the other and it seems to fill the gaps nicely. I added some flange, what would a techno-ish tune be without a flanged part??

I have more to do, that's all I could get done in 2+ hours tonight. Plenty of msuic vacancy left in the 2:00-2:40 section, still haven't decided on strings or acoustic guitar...

I never heard the first version but this doesn't grate on me so I guess it must be better. I think the guitars are too low in the mix though. I can't really hear them. The bass sounds fairly good right now and I like the groove very much thank you. Wait....I'm trancin' out.....too much acid in college. :D

Me too :p

Thanks, I was thinking of bringing the guitars up a tad more (especially that octave-lowered guitar track), you just made my mind up for me :D

I thought the tone on the guits was better. But I'm still saying, "re-track them." They're still too "gratey." The synth parts are lower in this mix, no? I think those should be where they were in the first version. Especially in the intro.

The flanger definitely works. I believe it's against truth in labeling laws to call it techno without a flanger somewhere :D.

The bass line is sounding real nice through the passage around 1:30.

Later Pinky.

There really aren't any synth parts, it's all guitar and some noise made in the original Acid tracks (that were included in the drum parts) and the one synth sample I ran 4 times in the beginning and a couple times at the end, otherwise, next to no synths...

Unfortunately, rerecording the guitars is not an option, it's not me playing :D (my co-conspirator Lew was in charge of guitars this time, I did the bass and some retinkering of the Acid loops a friend from Cali sent me). I love producing and playing, but I can't shred like Lew ;). he's been playing for like 35 years to my 10, and I have tendencies toward ambient and groove, he's more apt to lead work.
