I like it...has that big, grande feel to it.....sort of over the top arena rock stuff...nice playing man.... :D

Dogman, Thanks for listening. :) :D.

So no nitpicks? No comments or critiques? I guess that's good. There's the opening guitar that zings quite a bit and I've been meaning to redo that. :)

Anyhoo, thanks again. :)

BB,
In the intro I'd pan a little of the effect across the stereo image - it's a nice fat sound that seems unnaturally stuck in 1 channel. Just enough to give the impression of the guitar being a pebble dropped near the bank & the concentric wave's edge reaching the other side.
Sometimes the bass needs a little more definition. Nice melody & structure.
Other than that it sounds pretty flash.

It kind of reminds me of the first Fleetwood Mac album with Buckingham on guitar (I'm So Afraid in particular). Canned drums? Not bad at all. Me like. Chop off about 10 seconds of the silence at the beginning though. I was starting to check my connections here when it finally kicked in. :D

Nice work bigbubba. After around 1:20 the main guitar line could come out a little more IMO.

Tim

Bigbubba, it's hard to tell with these crappy pc speakers I am forced to listen to, but it seems to me that there is a little mud in the 300hz range. Maybe cut a decible or two there in the eq. Or maybe it's just soundclick's mp3 compression screwing it up?
And I kind of agree with rayc about the panning of the effect. I think it's meant to be much bigger than it is.
Nice tune overall.

I didn't mention the silence at the start....I forgot about that after it started playing.... :o

I like the depth and panning of the mix in general, although on the phones I'm lisetening with ,the left side seems to dominate the overall mix just a bit...I like the mood of the tune and it kinda reminds me of something that Lindsy Buckingham/Fleetwood Mac would do as well...
Good playing ,cool song !!!

it seems to have a bit of dominence on the left channel, i would flip that so the dominence is on the right side, personally i fing that gives it less of an un easy feel, but other than that, it was amazing, very clear, and the playing it self was verry powerful.

rayc - Thanks for listening man. I agree about the panning. Don't know why it didn't stick out before. OK, next time I mix it, I'll focus on a bass a little. :) Could be the mud mentioned by Rokket.

Track Rat - Thanks for listening. Hehe, I keep thinking of cutting that intro silence and keep forgetting. :)

Timothy Lawler - Tim, thanks for listening. I'll try to raise the main melody a little. :)

Rokket - Thanks for listening. I keep going between noticing the mud and liking the mud. But now that you've mentioned it, I'll try to drop a little more in the master out. It's the extra verb added to the melody that wets the whole thing in reverb.

variaxman - Thanks for listening. Interesting point about the left channel dominating. Hadn't notice. Now that you mention it, I notice it a bit. It's also the second rhythm panned left, that does the one-note hits that's probably contributing to it. That one's off time here and there. Not as tight as I'd like. :)

Nick_Black - Thanks for listening. The uneasy feel you mention might from the slightly off time rhythm hits. :) Thanks for the kind words.

All, thanks for the kind words. Especially from some of you "ki**-a$$" (edit: "KICK A$$". ARGHHHHHH!!!!! - Thanks Track Rat for pointing it out) players. I hadn't expected such a good reception. For a bit of background - this is, as usual, a hymn (a P&W song) that I just put music to. The tune itself is an existing hymn and it allows me to focus on playing and mixing instead of worrying about song structure and the tune. :)

Thanks again, all. :) I'll post the changes made to my previous song and to this song as soon as I can figure out how to use the plugin that I downloaded for free and that has expired. I'm trying to uninstall it, clean the computer and install it again for another round of 14 days of unlimited usage. :)

Sorry guys, didn't mean to call anyone kiss a$$. I meant KICK a$$. :) Cheers.

I'm reminded to ask, does my guitar dist. sound fake? Or just something that doesn't stick out way or another?

Specifically about the guitars since you asked....The rhythm guitar (on the right?) has a pretty crunchy/OD tone to it. So it's ok that way. The leads sounds ok - not buzzy which can get anoying. It's a smooth sound that your (excellent) playing caries smoothly throughout the song. And yes the mix is leaning slightly left. Drums are well done - some work put in there I can tell.....Love the way you take a hymn and make it sound so cool......
Echo foldback effect is neat....

:) :D :) :D

man, i think it sounds awesome. youve got some killer guitar tones in this one. i personally like all the verb and delay. it gives it a BIG sort of 80's metal feel to it. my only nitpick would be the slight fret-buzz or whatever that is in the opening guitar lines. the playing is superb and everything seems to sit in the mix nicely. great job! :)

Cool Bubba, bass sounds great on my system. The melody and instrumentation is excellent. Drums sound good too. Sounds at parts like 0:55 that bagpipes would be fitting (I know, odd suggestion  :p ) Sounds good man, if I had any nits it would be to maybe create some more space in the mix with EQ. Sounds good, but just sounds to my ears like that could be improved some. Just an idea, maybe another guitar in there just for harmonies at key parts. Good work here, enjoyed it

ido1957 - Thanks for listening man. :) I'm glad you like it. It does make it easier to just take existing hymns and not worry about structure or melody. Just focus on arranging, playing, mixing, and producing it. Glad you like the drums. They still don't sound too real.... but I keep trying.

Greg_L - Thanks for listening. :) I'm glad you like the 80s feel of big arena rock that I was shooting for in this. I agree with the buzz comment. I had put DR strings on my fender squire after using Elixirs always and the new strings just buzz. So I'm thinking when I change the strings, I'll put Elixir back on and redo the intro.

SnakeDog5050 - Hey there buddy. Thanks for listening. :) OK, I hear you about the EQ'ing out some more space. You have any specific range in mind? Another guitar? I'm afraid I'm not THAT creative. But I could always mess around. That's how we learn. For some reason, I had the same initial feeling that something could be done (EQ-wise) but it went away after listening to it 10,000 times and just getting used to it. And yes, it could _always_ be improved. :)

The reason I asked for guitar tones was 'coz this was done using Amplitube. And I know it could be a lot better, but this is where I'm at in the process of learning to mix and thanks to all the people here that help out, I'm hoping to keep improving. :)

All,

Here's what I have so far:
  1. Pan the intro guitar better.
  2. Maybe more definition on the bass.
  3. Chop off 10 seconds from intro.
  4. Maybe raise the lead guitar after 1:20 by a db.
  5. Remove some mud from 300Hz range.
  6. The left side is a little in the mix.
  7. Maybe play with EQ to carve out some space. Although this might be fixed after remove the 300Hz range mud.
  8. Possibly introduce another guitar. (That might take some creativity.)

Any more ideas? I'm looking for all feedback. If you have any negative comments that might make this better, please don't hold it back. I'm not into coming here to get kudos and going away thinking that was the best mix. I'd rather learn and make it as good as possible. :)

Hey Bubba, I find that just searching for a part's best frequency and raising it a bit, then lowering that same frequency a bit on other parts works decently. Just try picking different frequencies for every guitar for some clarity... also something I like to do, if you want to try some more guitar and are less adventerous, just playing the extra part exactly the same, but an octave up on the fretboard. IMO, that usually sounds cool. Cheers
The guitar tones give me a bit of an early 80s U2 vibe
