Hi guys im trying to make music but I need a good beat making programme.

I was going to get a mac and use logik but I read online that Pro Tools is the best so I can use that on a Windows PC which is cheaper :)

Basicly im on a tight budget so i cant afford Pro Tools 10 but i have found Pro Tools 9 for £99 on 2 websites here are the links tell me if they look legit please:

(Take out the spaces it didnt let me post them otherwise)

htt p://ww w.musiconmypc.co.u k/protools-m-powered
htt p://ww w.guitarguitar.co.u k/recording-studio/detail.asp?stock=12032010131632

Is that what I need? £99 sounds a bit too cheap seeing as Pro Tools 10 is like £400 i think.

Now theres something I dont understand about iLok USB smart key? sounds expensive do i have to have it?

my other option is to get Pro Tools 7 or 8 or something, what you do suggest?.

Sorry about the long write up but im looking for any advice or help I can get from the experts on here.

Thanks in advance for any replys :) x

OK, a few things to note.

Pro tools MP is M powered which means it requires an maudio hardware device. There's a list of compatible ones on avid.com
I believe you still need to authorise with an ilok, but check that to be certain.

Iloks are a security key. If you have a protools licence on one, protools will not open without the ilok.

Straight up PT9 authorises with ilok but you can use any hardware you like. (Motu, presonus, whatever)

Pro tools, Pro Tools MP, Pro Tools, and Pro Tools HD all have different specs like number of tracks, number of busses etc etc.
Avid have charts of what you get and what you don't get, so maybe take a look at that.

But the main thing that catches my attention is you probably don't really need (want) pro tools.

Beat making suggests you're going to work with midi and samples a lot?
If this is the case there are definitely much better suited suites out there, like ableton.

I use several programs including pro tools and logic. Between the two, I'd rather use logic for beats... However, you should take a look at Reason if beats are your thing. Runs on a mac or PC.

Alright I hear what both of you are saying, this is quite alot to take in but your both helping me alot thank you.

(Let me quickly explain so you have more info to help me, I am a singer song writer but I want to make my own beats rather than getting someone else to make them cause I know what sound I want to make, im looking to make pop/r&b beats)

So from what your both saying, i dont really need pro tools and if i did get it i would have to buy a ilok usb?

so I would be best to get Reason or Ableton? (I have Fruity Loops 10 but its a bit too simple).

I can use logik on my new windows laptop if i get linux installed and apple put on it i suppose?.

Thanks again for your help by the way keep your help coming and I will be very grateful thanks :) x

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

I can use logik on my new windows laptop if i get linux installed and apple put on it i suppose?.

It's your call but i doubt that'd be worth the hassle. There are a good few windows based daws that really lend themselves to what you're doing.

Yer I had been having a good read over the internet after you suggested Ableton and I think im going to go with that it sounds like it will suit my needs.

Thank you for all your help man really I appreciate it alot :) x
