Just stumbled on the site tonite...Great links and info.

I'd like to know what other folks have come up with for the mic inputs in their live room.

so far we're looking at 24 ins on the wall with male "pig tales" (20 in all) comming from various other rooms. we have two iso's and a lounge.(while we're at it we decided to wire up the bathroom as well.

Having never built a panel from scratch, I was wondering what nifty DIY options are out there.
My thoughts are to build a box frame and install a 6 rackspace panel (punched out for the fem xlrs) and just mount tht on the wall...avoiding recessing the panel in the control room wall.
love to see pics of what others have done.

is it ok to post pics here of the new room?
Thanks, looking forward to getting to know some of you.

Absolutely. Post away my friend. In my room what I did was to take a blank 2U rack spacer plate and drilled 16 holes with a hole saw in a drill and mounted the XLRs in it and mounted it in the wall between the live room and the controll room. I'll out a picture up of it tonight.

I'd like to see more of these too, as I'm planning something similar.
"Snapper" did this at his studio:
Looks like a 2U rack plate to me too Track. ;)

Cool!
So the other side would have the male XLR's right?
And the 2 xlr's are just soldered together with a short piece of cable right?
Any baffeling, or heavy insulation between the 2 panels?

No. From there I built a snake that goes directly to the inputs of the mic preamps (it's routed through Panduit which is basicly a cable trough that mounts to the basboard/wall). And yes the cavity and hole through the wall is heavily insulated and caulked.

"I see", said the blind man!
So you use a pre-fab snake for your cabling from that panel.
And it's the snake's xlr's you're mounting to the panel?

Here are a couple of my wallplates. They mount into standard wall boxes, and the snake pigtail ends come up into a floor panel with a hatch top under my desk. These were custom made and engraved by Conquest Sound. Very Slick. I think the smaller plate was around 40$ and the larger $85 with engraving.

No prefabed snakes. I bought a bunch of Switchcraft XLRs that I mounted and bulk Beldon 8451 wire and soldered it all myself. The +4 line outs from the preamps stub up in the patch bay.

Did I say pre-fab?
Man, someone hit me upside the head with a 2x4 or a piece of RC, what ever ya got laying around!
I meant fabricated. As in custom.

Nice looking panels Dan!!
Where's Conquest Sound?

You gotta either find a local dealer to order from them, or it's pretty easy to become a "dealer" so you can buy direct from them. I'm a dealer now :-) They also sell snake/ mic cabling, connectors, etc at good prices. Lemme know if I can help you out when the time comes to order.
