Hi all,

Need some info to help get me started in sonar.

1) Coming from PA9, I found that sonar does not let me play Cakewalk generic Gm sounds internally, is there something I’m doing wrong here?

2) The click, again inPA9 I could play this internally, is there a way to run the click without having to sent it to a keyboard, via midi?

3) Making drum loops, is there any reference material on hoe to make these using midi and efficiently?

4) Most importantly, My KEYBOARD, has a slight delay when using Sonar, if I run Vsampler alone, there is no problem at all, but if I use Vsampler or any other DXI’s, I get a very slight time gap from the time I press a key to when the sound gets produced, if I try to play fast the lag gets worse, Please Help.

Nothing you do is wrong :) It's just because SONAR doesn't recognize Microsoft GS softsynth which was used by PA9 to produce MIDI sound. I'm sorry, but what I heard, Microsoft is the one to blame for this issue.

Yup, but it will be a bit longer than you thought. I mean, sequence MIDI click pattern, copy paste the clip as you need. Insert DXi VSC, route the midi click to VSC DXi channel 10 :)

What version of Sonar? If you happened to have Slicy Drums MIDI plugin, then it can be very usefull to make MIDI beats. I think the manual explains it good.

That's latency. It's classic common problem. Make sure you run WDM driver (or ASIO for SONAR v.2.2 and v.3). Options-->Audio set the latency lower. What's your soundcard?

ps. Sorry for quick reply... Must go now... :)

LATER! :)

Cakewalk has no internal GM sounds, nor does SONAR. James' answer is a little puzzling to me in light of that.

Ugh... I'm back now... :) Let's see...

GREAT!!! we got same spec here...

Let's dive deeper :)

Why isn't the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth available in Sonar?

The Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth is not available when you are using WDM drivers in Sonar. Use MME or ASIO drivers instead of WDM if you need/want the MS GS Wavetable Synth.

How do I get the metronome to work in Sonar?

Sonar's internal metronome expects that you have an external physical synth connected. This "bug" has existed for ages. Cakewalk says that they will fix it in Sonar's next major release due out RSN. (no idea whether that is 3.2, 3.3 or 4.0)

In the meantime, there are a couple of approaches.

Use your PC's internal speaker
Configure a softsynth
generate a MIDI click track and print it to audio, then play it back as needed.
Pay $14 to Mike Norman and get his DXi Ping pluging. http://www.rmnorman.com/PingDXi/PingDXi.html

I'm experiencing audio dropouts. What are some settings I can check?

Setting the I/O buffer size greater than 64 and making sure your drives are in DMA mode are the key things to check. An I/O buffer size of 256 works for many. Check drive settings in Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, Primary & Secondary Channels. Right click and select Properties, Advanced Settings.

You're so smart, Jaymz... Why?

Because....
