New to recording

Hello al, I've been a musician for abut 6 years. I now want to start recording. I'm new to recording but I understand some things, types of mics, EQ, compression, gain etc. I'm planning on buying a blue baby bottle for acoustic guitar and vocals, and a Shure SM58 for electric guitar. I am unsure of what preamp to get and how to connect to my mac. I was considering a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, is this a good preamp for acuostic and electric guitar and vocals, do I need a USB interface, mixing board, or other equipment? or can I just connect the preamp through the USB port directly?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
 
That will be fine, Focusrite has an excellent reputation, I recommend using them. All you will need to do is install the Focusrite drivers into your Mac and plug the Focusrite in via USB. You will need a DAW/Host software though, such as Cubase, Reaper, Protools. The Scarlett should come with a limited version of some software to get you started.

You do not need a mixer, and the interface has two preamps.(so you don't need a preamp) The only other equipment you will need is a monitoring system, you will need closed back headphones to record acoustic guitar and some kind of speakers to mix/listen on. I suggest Adam, but there are others like Mackie, Tannoy, KRK, Yamaha. Go to a music store and demo some to see what sound you prefer.

The 2i4 is an all-in-one interface. It has preamps built into it.
You don't need any extra mixers/preamps etc.


What OS are you running?
We had a thread last week about the 2i4. Check for yourself to be sure, but I'm pretty sure it was only supported on 10.7/10.8.
