New to Recording - Do I need a pre amp and a mixer?

i use a Shure sm58 that i previously ran through an ART pre amp into my boss home recording studio. I only tried this for about 6 months and now record directly onto my laptop using Audacity. i run my mic and acoustic through a Peavey 6 usb mixer. Do i still need the pre amp? Does anyone recommend an alternative recording package on PC on a budget?

Hiya JJ & welcome to the BBS.

You don't need the Art preamp using the mixer because the mixer has it's own preamps. You can use the Art with the mixer if you like the sound better, just run out of the Art into a line in on the mixer.

There are a few cheap software packages today and some free. Visit shops and look around to see what's good for you. Others will drop in and suggest some for you, Im sure. Just be careful because what you buy today as you grow in audio may become obsolete tomorrow.
