You're not really making me want to click your website for more tips...

You mean "A Beta 58 doesn't need phantom power" I presume.

Why stop there with cheap alternatives, you can go even cheaper with a Hello Kitty Karoake special... very warm and punchy

Correct, I meant phantom power.

I'm sure places like Abbey Road studios will be overjoyed to read Goldbit's advice. Think of all the money they can save replacing all their U87s with Beta 58s!

Yeah, ideally he should own U87 but I thought he was on a pretty tight budget..... I am afraid he wont be making a purchase at 3Gs. In the lower price bracket he's safer with either SM57 or SM58 mic for vocal.
Also, here is a list of successful artists and bands who used dynamic mics for some of the songs on their albums:
Red Hot Chili peppers
U2
Incubus
Michael Jackson
Metallica
Slayer

Of course a dynamic CAN be used. I've done it myself--and recommended them to others on this very forum as recently as yesterday.

What I was taking issue with was your blanket assertion that condenser mics are just "hype". They're not. They're a staple for a great deal of recording and the best choice for many things.

Finally, even if a dynamic is the way to go, the Beta 58 is an unusual choice for an "only mic". There are others out there that are useful for a wider range of purposes.

What I was referring to as hype was the misinformation on the net about 'cheap' condenser mics being the first choice for recording vocals.
