It's not pretty, but it works! (see pic) All the channels play and record! Playback sounds fantastic! I'll get in touch with tascam today and see if they can help me with a more permanent solution.

pajarete, my local electronics specialty shop has a boneyard...there are a couple hirose connectors in there. I'll look and see if one is a 60-pin and pick it up for you. I'll be very surprised if Tascam has them, but still every bit worth the try. If I find one I'll PM you to get your address.

That 60-16 transport is so stinkin' 58-ish isn't it, Ethan?

Funny...looks like there is space for the flutter idler there between the sync and repro heads and I see mounting holes, but no idler...is it missing I wonder?

I'm not sure but I think that space was designed for a possible 4th head for different 1/2" and 1/4" track formats? There were many flavors of deck in the 60 series.

Cheers! :)

Hm...news to me. You are probably right though since there are two screws instead of the one for mounting the idler on the 80-8 and 58...

I didn't know that the ATR60 series had versions with mixed formats on one transport. I only knew about the 60-2, 60-2HS, 60-4HS, 60-8 and 60-16...all three-head decks I thought. Neat-o no matter what though. :)

Well, just to clarify, I don't believe they ever offered a 4 head unit for public consumption. I'm just suggesting that may have been an early design parameter that they made space for but didn't actually end up following through on.

Cheers! :)

awesome, appreciate it. I talked to Tascam today, and you're right, they've been discontinued. I did order the manual and a couple of new hubs however. Hmm, just checking around for hirose connectors at mouser, and it looks like they might have them - they're not in stock, but they at least show up in their database...

I just spent some quality time with the machine, the last real issue were the guides that move the tape off the heads when the transport is in ff or rewind. They weren't coming back up in playback - the grease had gummed up. After a cleaning them and giving them some new lube, they're working very smoothly. I'm just loving the sound of it so far - even electric guitar direct (which usually feels brittle to me) sounds nice once it hits the tape.

Yeah, Tascam used those Hirose connectors (they are the Sumicon 1600 series from Hirose or HRS) for decades but they are getting harder and harder to find. Consider yourself fortunate not to be on the list of folks trying to find the 20-pin connectors for their M-520 mixers.:o

All kinds of models of Teac/Tascam mixers and recorders used them.

BTW, quick search at Mouser shows me there isn't a Sumicon connector in sight.

Last time I needed any I had to get them from Canford in the UK and their supllies are drying up as well.

I will have a look the next time I pass by my favorite electronics shop...should be in the next couple-three weeks.

Have fun with the 60. That's a nice deck.

pajerete,

50 cents got me a Hirose Sumicon 1600 60-pin connector out of the boneyard at Norvac...I have it if you still need it/want it for a nicer jumper plug solution for your ATR. It is in good shape although there are already a couple jumper wires soldered in that you'll need to remove...no hood but hey, at least the connector is there...I'm hoping the connector on the ATR is female as the only Hirose connectors there were 60-pin male.

PM me if you want it and we'll make arrangements.
