Greetings all

I just recently decided (after many many months) to go digital for recording. I have never recorded anything before in my life but have been in many studios to record and watch others record. Anyways, i bought a Fostex FD-4 just for my basement. My question is how do i do basic recording. Or what is the best way to use this thing. There are many other message boards out there but no one seems to want to help me. I am new to all of this and am just dying to take the first step in home recording (that eing to actually record something). Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Neil

welcome aboard bro =). Even if analog is better etc., digital is the way to be, its improving vastly with new tech. GOOD CHOICE!!! Well, there is no real answer to that question, but I'd recommend just following the manual in the recording section (if there is one) so that you can record your first session. Just take one of your written songs, and play each instrument through it, or take parts of other people's songs. Start reading up on this site, cause let me tell you, it helps. (remember its all about experimenting, therefor you should do anything you can to your mixes that you think might be a good idea, it'll only improve you....lotsa people post about that up on here, like mic placement, just cool panning ideas, effects processing)No matter what you think.
I'd recommend getting a program such as Cubase, cause even if you have a multi-track, these are always great tools for plugins (cheap ones online exellent) or just editing, etc. (if your on a budget, i can help you out with that, just email me) Just configure everything properly, start recording, get a descenet soundcard if you ever record on your computer, a mic (shure sm57 is a must for starting, as its all around and not expensive). Its a test to see who quits and who has the will power, who loves music, and who just sorta wants chicks. Don't give up. Have fun man, and welcome aboard.

You have a recorder...

Neil,
Welcome aboard. You say you got a Fostex FD-4, and you wanna record? Do you have anything that you can plug into the Fostex, like an instrument? or a microphone?? ;)

Plug it in, look for a red button somewhere, start making noises. Then plug something in another plug push a different red button and make some more noises!!!!

You're a multitracking recording artist!!!!

Seriously, look for a 'quick start' portion of your manual and read it while playing with the FD-4... Can't be that hard...

And next time you're taking a dump, bring the manual with you and read it.... :D

Any time you run into a specific problem, come here for help...
