This is what i'm talking about!!

People realize this and are finding it necessary to stock up their closets with analogue tape.
What do you folks plan on doing when the day finally comes?? Or will it??
 
No, they day will never come, not in our lifetime, really. The stuff will just get more and more expensive as tape gets more and more into a niche market.

Possibly 1" and 1/2" will actually get hard to find (though that's unlikely too) but 2" will be used for tracking for quite a while still, and 1/4" for mixing and audiophile classical recording will not go away for like, *decades*. Because people like the sound. Call the sounds good, call teh sound bad, call the sound religion, doens't matter. People like it and will use it. At one time or another the prices of machines will start rising as they fall apart, and repair will become more expensive as less people know how to repair them, and that will make more people switch to digital, and tape will be more expensive as a result, and so on, and so on.

But the day the last reel of 1/4" rolls out the factory? It's a loooong way in the future yet.

Heck, you can still get Super-8 film! ;) And that format SUCKS! :p

Analog has already bottomed out and is currently gaining in popularity. Simple demand will guarantee supply of tape. We will soon have three suppliers of open reel tape -- Quantegy, ATR, and RMG International.

High quality Cassette by TDK and Maxell is readily available for the foreseeable future.

I would be more concerned about stocking up on CD before the next digital craze makes it obsolete. ;)
 
Hey, some encouraging words! It seems the Analogue recording media situation is not as bad as i thought, particularly cassettes.

Thanks guys, i can now justify to myself hunting down something that has remained an object of fascination to me for quite some time now.... a nice 244.

Hey, the 244! Great choice! I have,... eh,... several! It was my first, and is still one of my fav's! It's high quality, feature loaded, and sounds great!

Best of luck in sourcing a like-new 244, in great shape. They're out there, if you shop carefully! ;)
 
Hello. I have finally joined the forum instead of just reading it. As most enthusiasts are technically inclined or know someone who is, what if a new-manufacture machine was made availabe as a kit? (Please don't laugh too hard.) It appears to me that the main problem for most of us is availability of precision-machined parts. Perhaps the manufacturer could offer a lower price by avoiding the labor cost of final assembly. Back when more people were interested in such products, HeathKit pulled this sort of thing off. Don't know if this would fly or not. You have to wonder who is going to take responsibility if a customer bends a capstan or drops a reel motor on his garage floor. Economically speaking, I think it would have to be the customer's problem. Hmm... Perhaps some things are just plain impossible. But there's always hope.
