Quick listen...intro flute-like vibrato is distracting due to being off rythm.
Guitar playing is a little sloppy, especially backing part during solo and the solo itself - nice attempt to layer parts and sounds, but they need to be tightened up. There might just be a bit too much happening during the middle part/solo.
Overall, interesting mix of guitars and sounds, cool vibe and buildup. I agree, it has a nostalgic feel.
Maybe one bar too many at the end, but just my feeling...
Cheers,

This is cool...yeah, kind of sloppy, but in a cool way. Your guitar playing reminds me a bit of John Frusciante's solo stuff. Experimental and very cool. Nice separation going on. I really like it alot actually...am typing as I listen. I'm not good on commenting on mixes...it's kinf of an artist thing sometimes, I think it sounds just fine. Keep it up.

Thanks for the comments.

It's interesting you both mentioned the "sloppiness", which I of course had noticed also. This base of this song is just two tracks. First was the chord progression, playing for five or six minutes just improvising variations in the intensity, etc. Then I recorded another track over it improvising mini melodies based on the chord progression.

Then I chopped it all up and remixed and this came out and I began to really like it. The sloppy feel I think has a bit to do with the fact that most of the time the part being played wasn't listening to the other parts at the same time but the serendipity of the whole thing sort of overrode my desire to re-record it to tighten it up.

Plus the sloppiness grew on me as it became part of the song to me.

It was a bitch to mix because at times there were four or five guitar tracks all recorded from the same guitar and amp so I needed to eq like crazy to try to separate things out. I still think it's muddy on the bottom when the bass part comes in but I'm just not that good of an engineer and finally had to say it was done and move ahead.

(Oh, actually a third track. After I pieced together the base of the song I went back and recorded the solo that shows up in the middle section.)

I don't think TIGHT is an adjective I'd use for what this aspires to be. A point missed I fear!
Informal, evolving, organic is what this is - I like the almost crying solo -(Split Enz had a similar sound on guitar in Stranger Than Fiction).

:)

That's a theme with me. I'll put more stuff up over the next couple weeks, I'm not a big fan of having everything rigidly tight. I really like a looser feel and the freedom to play behind or ahead of the beat when I like, as long it's controlled and on purpose and not just being sloppy.

Trippy.

The overall volumes of the mix are nice, but powerful. The tremelo bit is cool, but really smacks you in the back of the head when it comes. I think each entry point of each instrument does that. With headphones on, each instrument really smacks you in the side of the head. It's a bit jarring.

I love the instrumentation though, so I think this is a mix issue.

You could probably offset the "fist to the ear" by fading up these individual tracks instead of hitting them at 110% off the bat.

Good song. I like the rustic, imperfect rhythms. I dunno if that was intentional, or not...but its awesome. I also like the changes in volume and timbre. The dynamics are great.

Very inventive. I enjoyed this quite a bit. As someone already said there is great separation and dynamics. Rythmically, I liked the way it kind of loped along at its own pace. Very unique and a fun listen. Thanks!

Thanks for all the comments. I've grown quite fond of the song over time. It kind of took a life of its own and surprised me with what it became.

This is pretty cool stuff. The basic chords are kinda reggae like. Nice seperation of instruments towards the middle. Experimental, but definitely in a good way.
