Hey there Leon Redbone!

Nice guitar work. Really nice guitar work. What did you use to record it? The harp also turned out well.

The vocals sounded a bit boxy although good overall. I also bet that if you pushed your vocal chords just a little bit more it would really add to the energy of the song.

Good work!

nice playing...harp and guitar both...those vocal harmonies were unexpected and smooth...a while back you posted the "God/internet" song, and I think I like this one even better....gibs

Wow, I really liked the song. There's a lot of talent in there. I agree that the vocals were a bit hidden. I think it would help if they were turned up a little bit over the guitar (I'm not sure they need it, but you could try adding a little compression, but you don't want to damage the realistic live-sound that you're going for). Also, I thought the the guitar was a little muddy sounding. Maybe just a touch less midbass and some more high end to make it a little more crisp. I'm impressed, and if you don't mind I think I'll leave that one on my computer.

That was some great stuff, Slim!!!
It has a real "backwoods" feel to it, and I sat here tapping out some percusion on my desk throughout the whole song. Vocals sounded great, and I dig the bit of harmony there.
I think I'll keep this one for awhile, too. :)
Great job!!

Man... Great guitar job.. I actually wish I could hear this song with ol' poor dynamics amd distorted sound... it has that feel..

Great work!!!

Thats some great pickin' Slim! Really liked the tune and the harmony vocal. One criticism: I heard some distortion in the harp track. Overall very enjoyable though.

Thanks so much for listening and your feedback. Your comments are very helpful and are right on the issues that I've been working on.

Slack: It's a Martin 00016C (Classical) guitar recorded with an AT4047 (large condensor) mic, about 6 inches away from and pointed at the soundhole at about a 30 degree angle, into an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 and mixed with N-track. I'm thinking that the boxiness of the vocal is probably a room acoustics issue. I'm standing in the open double doorway of my 9 by 14' "office" facing out into my 14 by 18' living room, which has a lot of wood and a big rug. The natural room sound seems to work better for the guitar than the vocal. I suppose I should break down and work on some acoustical treatment. After reading and consulting with John Sayer, I want to try singing out the window (!) but it's too cold right now.

Chuch: I agree that the vocal should come up a little, especially in the beginning of the song. I kept going back and forth with this; when I back off the guitar it starts to sound too soft. Part of my problem is that as a solo performer, I always want as much bass as possible on the guitar, and to get that I'm boosting the eq at about 300-400hz, which is about the same range that adds strenth to the vocal. But maybe, as you say, I'm overdoing it a little leading to some muddiness on the guitar and weakness in the vocal. (I've already got as much compression as I'm comfortable with.) I've also got the high end (like a high shelf starting at between 10-11k) boosted a bit -- but I think that Sonusman and the other pro engineers are probably right that the software boosts don't work very well past about 6.

Do I MIND if you keep it on your systems? That's a great compliment; I'm humbled that you'd want to. YES YES, keep it forever, send it to friends, etc etc.

Thanks again.

Sweet stuff there. I like it a lot. I'm still laughing from reading where Slack called you Leon Redbone...

I did hear a little vocal distortion I think right before the harp came and in a couple other places where you seemed to get into it a little more. That guitar sound fits the song perfect.

Still can't stream it, slim

My player must be allergic to this song. Still can't stream it. I'll download it a little later.

I love/hate mp3.com

Ray, I've sent artist support two messages. The low fi play doesn't work for Pallet (it does work for my other song). They still haven't fixed it as of yesterday. Do you know, is there any other way to get their attention?

"Is there any other way to get their attention". I've been trying to upload an artist page picture for 2 months now and have emailed them. I usually get a computer generated response that either 1) has nothing to do with the quesiton or problem. or 2) the response suggests you do something that you've already tried, even if you told them you've already tried it.

With that said, you can try the 'technical help' forum at mp3.com, I think they have a company man who hangs out there and can suggest something or tell you what is wrong, or otherwise get things shakin'

I still can't stream it BTW, but I am downloading it right now, with my computer it should be finished downloading by noon Friday!

I'll be back

You knew I'd like this one didn't you? Glad I d/led it. I'm keeping this baby. Loved it Slim. The accoustic guitar sounded great. The playing and the sound. It was there. Nice tune to, vox sounded really good. I like this tune. I'm listening to it again and still liking it, there a lot of playing and very few finger glitches. I would have had to do a whole nights worth of takes to do that on an accoustic.

Nice job
