Hi kids,

I'm working on a new song right now and I just finished the first mix. It still needs more instrumentation, but I wanted to get some early feedback on the composition and sound and some suggestions of where to take it from here.

You can listen to it here:

www.poemadept.com/Recording/recording.htm

It's called "Anne" for now.

- Any ideas for a name?
- I think it sorely needs some low end, and then another instrument for the solo spaces and fills, but I can't decide what would be appropriate...piano, cello, upright bass, viola, melodica...any ideas?
- Anything else you can think of?

Thanks!
Peter

leavings,

..well that's one great song. The instruments seem well balanced...I can hear some precussion and a violin.....

...Your vocals sound excellent but seem to loose energy in the low range...
..great job...

What kind of percussion do you hear? I am reluctant to add a set because I think it would detract from the folky feel of it, but I can't think of what would fit well rhythmically.

Do you think it needs low end? An upright bass or a cello? Maybe an electric bass?

Anyone ideas for a name? "Anne" seems a little too simple. I also thought of "The Old Couples Dance." Let me know if you think of anything.

Thanks!
Peter

As a trainee 'cellist destined never to shed the little wheels I'd have to say add 'cello so that it's in the middle tonal zone but not all through - bring it in at 2.20 or so & make it jaunty.
Bodran would be nice in the chorus.
&, seriously, a tiny bit of tin whistle in the instrumental passages - just reprising the "That's how we'd be if I was your man" line because the playings fine but there's a need for some sort of melody in those passages.
AS IT IS it's VERY nice - but needs a little distintive signature.

Sounds cool, pretty cool acoustic sound... maybe a bit more depth. Or I think a bass part would sound good in this song. Maybe a slight high cut on the vox, a tad harsh on my system. That just may be my system though.
Flute or even whisting sounds fitting to me in this. Maybe some piano chords to follow along later on... but I definitely vote for some simple bass part to fill up the song.
Anyway, good start man, enjoyable tune and nice singing  ;)

A sort of tambourine without the rattling cymbals but larger & played with a short double headed stick from the underside.

I made a typo - it's spelt = bodhran & it's held from the inside & played from the outside SORRY.
"The bodhrán is the heartbeat of Irish music. The bodhrán is a 16" round by 4" wide. The framedrum is made of some type of hardwood and has a goat-skin head. Comes with a tipper (double-headed stick) to beat the drum. This beautiful bodhrán is a tunable drum with 8 areas on the drum to tune the head. Comes with the tool so you can always keep your drum in tune. This is a really nice looking drum. Excellent drum for the beginner to the professional to use. It also can hang on the wall for a nice conversational piece!"

Very cool song - I like it a lot! I'm a big fan of this type of music. Can't play it worth beans though (lol).

Mix is cools as is bit I would make a few changes - for personal preference:
- up the harmony vocals
- more reverb on main vocals to push them back a bit.

This has tons of room for accompanying instruments. Anything from bass to strings to more guitars.....

If you get more instruments please post a new thread so we can enjoy.

Very nice.....downloading for later enjoyment....

:D :) :) :D

You could call it "If I were your Man" or "Anne (If I were your Man)"...I don't really like the out-in-left-field names for songs...it can cut down on a lot of confusion if the name obviously identifies the song.

I agree with the comments that you could fill out the song with more instruments, but I would keep the sparse instrumentation you have at the beginning (maybe through to the end of the first chorus) and then start in with added instruments on the second verse (at about 52 seconds into the song...I would leave out the break between the first "Annie" chorus and the second verse). Just some thoughts.
