The deep shell always seems like a good idea, but they don't mic as easily and you have to whack the crap out of them to get the snares to do anything.

Don't forget about the reso head and snare wires either. I put a Puresound 30-strand on my 7 inch deep maple and that thing came to life.

the reso head is an almost new Evans 300 hazy. i swapped out the 20-strand with a 30 and it rocks! i don't have to beat the shit outta the thing to get it to sound like a snare, which helps my inconsistancy issues BIGTIME!

i bought a coated Powerstroke 3 but didn't put it on. there's a coated ambassador on it now with no more than 5 hours on it.

it's sounding WAY better already.

It's not for every song, but I still like the sound of a leather wallet on a snare... think "Midnight Hour".

It kinda sounds like the "thwapp!" you get when you compress a snare. A lot of times I'll do that at a rehearsal when they're working on vocals 'cause it makes the volume lower too.
