Big Kenny, those boxes are all very different. What kind of characteristics are you wanting? What are you recording? Type of music and sound?
The 1960 is a 2-channel tube unit w/ pres and comps. The MSS-10 is a single-channel pre. DW Fearn VT-1 is a single-channel tube pre. They all sound and act very differently. What's most important to you?

Yes... I have used a Drawmer 1960... had to use [or was instructed to use, and the producer thought I was using] a 1960 for much of an album... which led directly to the invention of the Drawmer 1969.
I found that the 1960 was like trying to pull my audio through a sponge. Very washed out, indistinct, lacking in emotion kind of sound. The Martech and the D.W. Fearn are two of the 'largest' sounding pre-amps I have ever encountered. The Martech having a space around it like no other, and the D.W. Fearn having an expression of emotion that was like no other.
Between the D.W. Fearn and the Martech you really can't make a mistake. The two compliment each other in no uncertain terms... and both sound like they were handed down from above.

I had a 1960 and I loved it-especially the compression. I'm sorry I sold it. I'm not familiar with the other models you mentioned but I must respectfully disagree with Mercenary about the Drawmer. It's subtle and perhaps not for everyone. I sure miss mine.
