I just bought a Dell Dim 4300 with Win XP. Any ideas what I can use as a decent multi-track recording program with XP for now? I downloaded the Sonar 30 day Trial and it ran down the day counter in 1 day then expired.

Anyone dual-boot with 98/XP??

System: 20Gig, 1.6Ghz, 5400RPM, Integrated Sound

I've been 4 tracking w/Midi as hobby and wouldn't mind getting a little more into it.

Any suggestions...

Sonar is one of the better ones and works well with XP. Also one of the easier ones to learn.

You can probably start with what you have, but your 'puter is a little lacking in a couple of areas. You probably are going to want a second HDD - most definitely 7200 rpm. Leave your OS and Programs on the 5400 and use the 7200 for your audio files. Also, your sound card probably ain't going to cut it for decent quality. You want at least 256Mb memory also, 512 even better.

As I said, though, you can use what you have for starters as you learn the ropes. Just don't expect studio quality. Once you get the hang, invest in a good sound card designed for audio (Delta, Echo, etc.) and a second HD. You'll also need (if you don't already have it) a mixer or preamp to get the mic level up to line level to feed your sound card, and of course mics.
