New Overheads for my studio

LDC mics are not always a better choice for drum overheads... I like LDC's too, but many times I've prefered SDC's over LDC's for overheads.

Absolutely, I totally agree. All I'm saying is that unless you got $600-$1k for SDC's as OH's you're better off with LDC's... not just for the OH's, but to pick up a good mix of the kit as well. Cheaper LDC's are way too bright/harsh IMO.

I disagree... I'd take a pair of Oktavas MC-012's over the SPB1's for overheads any day of the week. But at least we agree that we disagree... lol. Have a great day bro... I've got to get back to work.

Well, now we're talking a matter of taste. MC-012's are great mics... However, I remember listening to a .wav of drums with those as OH's and just didn't like the sound. They just weren't my cup of tea.

The idea here is that most people in these forums are micing kits with less mics - which I actually recommend. Kick mic, snare mic and a pair of OH's are all you need in the way of mics for a great drum sound - as long as the kit and room sounds good and the drummer can play.

Bottom line: If you're looking for OH mics, get a pair of large condensers. they pick up the entire kit much better than most small condensers. Of course, this is a generalization, but just don't assume that you need to get small condensers for OH's.

IMO, the clear hands down winner for a budget OH mic is the Oktava MK-319 and the Studio Projects B1 - both of which will run you less than $200 for a pair.

319's are harder to find (in the us) and more expensive than the 012's
and the b1 is just a little to harsh for me on overheads.

i know some people say it "sounds just like a u87" but whatever.

i'm not sure how you could put the b1 and the 319 in the same paragraph any way.

they both have thier thing, but are COMPLETELY different.

i also have 319's but use them less as overheads (than 012), if someone has bright or harsh cimbals they can help calm them down a little, and sometimes i like them in heavier stuff.

Are you confusing the B1 with the C1? The C1 is notoriously known for it's "u87" sound and harshness. Whether you think it sounds like the u87 is up to you... However, the B1 is not near as harsh as the C1.

Have you actually ever used any of these mics you are recommending? From reading your posts it doesn't seem like it.

Oh. Well why didn't you say so? What do you think about them? Just looking for some feedback from people who use them on a regular basis. I'm in the market for some good-sounding budget mics myself. I'm thinking about Oktavas, SPs, Rode NT-5, that range of stuff. I trust Dot's eval, but like to hear as many different takes on gear as possible.

Honestly, I think they are ok. Being that the original post was to facilitate discussion on budget OH's, specifically

the less i spend the better

MC-012's (but Quality Control Problem???)

Shure KSM 109's (need some more info on them)

Add finally the The Studio Projects B1's (has anyone had expreiences with these as OHs?)

What do we think? Also i'd love to hear clips of these mics in use if anyones got any?
