New MXL Tube Condenser Mic???...

It's probably like Lowes and Home Depot - Maytag, Whirlpool, etc... makes similar models of washers and dryers for both outlets, but gives them different model #s so they don't have to compete with price matching.

kidvybes, do you know how long the price is going to be $199 and what it's going up to after that?

It says "SALE PRICE!"...

Flatpicker...the MF site says regular price $279. and SALE price $199. so I would guess maybe the end of the month is a possibility...I would'nt wait too long to grab one of these at that price...the build quality is very nice for a $200. mic...more solid than my SP C-1..(hope Alan H. don't see this)...I would'nt be boosting this mic all over these threads if it wasn't a sweet deal...I've already got a V77s which is Harvey Gerst's favorite...the V69M has beaten some pretty serious contemporary tube mics (RODE NTK, SP TB-1, AKG Solid Tube, etc) that cost more $s in listening sessions posted all over the net...this one is a "no-brainer" for $200. shipped...I just used the 960 to record vocals on an album I'm working on with 3 different voices...a baritone (Barry White kinda bassy voice) and 2 other male vocalists in mid to upper range, and all 3 loved how their voices sounded on the mic...I used the metal pop-filter sold by Peluso Mics for $20 on Ebay (it's a Stedman copy) and the mic sounded very smooth with lots of detail...I recommend it honestly...I haven't been let down by any of the 4-5 MXLs in my mic cabinet...I end up chosing them over my Rodes (NT1000 & NT2) very often...go for it brother!

and for those guys who keep whining about the font I used above:

"Lighten Up and Chill!!!!...Someone trys to change up the vibe a little and you guys start freakin' out!...Relax...it's words on a screen...skip over it if it hurts!"

How do you even know it isn't supposed to be $199?

Yeah, it shows $280 crossed out in the magazine, but they never sold it for that. It has had like $250 or something around that crossed out and said $169 for the 993 pair since they came out in about September. All their new exclusive MXL mics have said that for a long time. It isn't a sale, it is a stupid marketing gimmick.

EVERY time MF puts something new in there that is exclusive to them, they make up some random price and cross it out like they dropped the price, but you couldn't even buy whatever it was at any point for the price they cross out.

Look at those new exclusive Gibson electric guitars in there. It's the same way with them.

that's not the point...

...forget about what it's supposed to be...just take it for what it is...a sweet tube mic for $200. that doesn't say "NADY" or "BEHRINGER" or "SAMSON" on it...MXL has already proven it's tube mics are outstanding values at the $299. price point (both the V69M & V77s go for about that much)...

Actually MF is basically the GC online store. They are one and the same. Go to the GC website and go to the online store or whatever it is and see what pops up. They don't sell EXACTLY the same stuff, but they're certainly affiliated.

Guitar Center Purchased MF...

yeah, it's looks like GC purchased MF in order to compete on the internet, rather than starting it's own web division...kinda like Gateway Computers buying eMachines so Gateway could compete in the retail stores...like the Gateway deal (eMachines is keeping Gateway in the black) Musician's Friend is driving sales for the parent company, GC...

Personally, I prefer dealing with MF online rather than sparring with the sales staff in GC who push what they are told to push...if one more sales person in GC tries to sell me an Oktava mic, it's gonna take a team of surgeons to remove it from the salesman's ___...

let's not rule out the "SamAsh factor" here. SamAsh is a major competitor of MF/GC on all fronts--online, brick and mortar and in print catalog, and SamAsh has always sold MXL mics. My guess is that in order to gain entry in MF/GC, and to not violate some sort of "exclusivity" agreement with SamAsh, MXL has had to change their model numbers and cosmetics on these mics.....much like they did with the special "Mars Music" mics (V67M rather than V67G, V93/2003, etc).

and i happen to really like some of the folks at my local GC. i've got a guy in drums i deal with exclusively, a guy in pro audio i deal with exclusively, and a guy in guitars that i deal with exclusively. i trust these guys, we're on a first-name basis, they know their shit, they know my shit and situation, we can have good, unbiased discussions on gear *and* they give me good prices on things--and so in turn they get all of my GC-based business. GC's not *just* a bunch of dunces.....while there are plenty of em employed there, i've managed to find a couple guys i can trust--and guys i'm happy to give commission to. i'm sure if you try hard enough, you can find a couple folks at your GC that you can trust as well.

...and so far, they haven't tried to push ANY oktavas my way. :D

cheers,
wade

Definitly, but there is a reason why they don't sell the same stuff, so that MF can compete with other online retailers without the store managers and salesperson wasting a bunch of their time and then going to buy it at MF.

So for example go to MF and try to buy Oktava Microphones...we know that GC sells a ton of them, why aren't they available at Musician's Friend? Same reason.

And yes, the $288 scratched out is a gimmick. Since MF is the only place that sells the item they can say that the 'regular' price is anything they want.

I doubt that there is any sort of Exclusivity deal with Sam Ash, because other stores also carry MXL mics. It is just that if MF started selling V69s at a $199 price because MXL worked them some massive bulk orders then all the other stores would likely drop them because they could not sell it profitably at that price. Once they dropped the MXL line what would the salesmen start saying to all the customers that mention MXL? "oh, they suck, you would never want to own one!"

Scratched Out Price...Sticker Price?

...when was the last time anybody paid sticker price on an automobile?

I got a art pro vla from mf that definitely was on sale. but who knows abut the rest of the stuff.

looks like the model number 960 is for mf. I looked at 5 web stores and called 2 GC's and no one else has it. Both CG's had a guy who told me about Groove tubes, I guess that's what they want to push right now. I bet that if you call any GC in the whole country you'll get a guy pushing GT's. Someone on the West coast or anywhere off LI, NY, give them a call and see if it's true, just for fun.

- I just searched for GT mic's and can't find them anywhere, now I don't remember what they were pushing. I found a lot of tubes, but no mics by them....

So WTH, I'll get a 960.
