the print in the ad:

"Introducing the new MXL 604 dual capsule Instrument Miking System. Based upon the highly accepted MXL 603 microphone, The MXL 604 is the latest in quality instrument microphones. The 604 delivers the dynamic range required in the most demanding instrument miking applications. Audition a new MXL 604 today and see how MXL has again moved the bar in affordable microphone technology."

aside from the typical b.s. towards the end, it looks like marshall has added a roll-off, pad, and omni capsule while keeping the price the same at $100. seems like a good deal. i wonder if they kept the innards the same or is it just "based."

Sounds to me like they're trying to get market share from the Oktava MC012 crowd.

probably.

i just saw another ad in guitar center's rag. it is $100 for the 603 + omni capsule package. that sounds like a super deal. i wonder if the omni capsule stands up to the quality of the cardiod cap.

anyone know anything more?

i haven't been able to find a new 603 anywhere for a while, i'm surprised they're keeping this at $100

that guitar center deal was for the 604.....not the 603. no one here has spoken up to having a 604 yet......so speculation on it being a 603 with interchangable capsules, etc., is all just that at this point--speculation.

the guitar center ad made the 604 out to be a 603 + omni capsule. that's the impression i got. would be great if someone from mxl could clarify by posting some information here or on their site!

and guitar center made the Oktavas they were recently blowing out to be perfectly legit too. they're not to be trusted. their job is to create hype and move product by any means necessary. :D

my point is simply that we don't know at this point in time. it'd certainly be nice *if* it's the same mic only with interchangable capsules. and it'd certainly be nice if those capsules could retrofit the 603--i've always liked my 603s a LOT--and have always wished for some omni (and hypercard) caps for them. and it would DEFINITELY be nice if we could get some "official" clarification or weigh-in on this. if i had a need for another set of sdcs, i'd go get a pair of 604s tomorrow just to see for myself. but i don't (and the wife would prolly kick my ass). ;)

still, we all know (or at least should) that even a minor change in the circuit (or even one of the component parts in that circuit) could make a difference in how the mic sounds. hell, engaging the LPF or the pad might be enough to do that--at which point it ceases to be "just like a 603".....to say nothing of the difference in response and pattern between the omni and cardiod capsules.

there's a good possibility that the 604 with omni might be a lot smoother of a mic than the 603 is....and there's a good possibility it's not. at minimum i would expect the 604 omnis to be less "boomy" up close as the 603s are--simply as a factor of the omni pattern. as drudge would say, "developing....."

anyway, it's late and i'm rambling....but i *am* excited about the potential here, please don't misunderstand......:p

I wrote to Marshall to get the scoop and this is what Wayne Freeman of MXL had to say:

"The 604 is indeed a 603 with a pad and roll-off switches and an omni-directional capsule. We have kept the circuitry identical to that of the 603 and in numerous blind tests of the cardiod capsule, no difference between the 2 models were detected. The pricing is $99.95 in a wooden storage box and we are delivering now. Hope this helps.

So there you have it.

fantastic! that's great to know. thanks for doing the legwork on this!

....it'd be VERY nice if they'll sell the omni caps separately.
