hey im new to this home recording thing. im a guitar player who used to love recording with his band and it sparked an intrest but im clueless about what alot of the terminology meens iv been reading through the manual but by the time i try to aply what ive read it gets all jumbled up in my brain one question i have is can you link the mr-8 to your computer and save your songs on the hard drive of yur computer so that you can have more space ? and can you do that with individual tracks so that you can mix them down later. also is it possible to put them on your computer and and get software for your computer to mix them down on there? i have lots of other questions but ill save them for later. please help i know that in the eyes of you pros im an idot. lol

welcome to the board scourge.

The best way to use the MR-8 is to use it in conjunction with your PC. (especially with such limited space on the 128 MB card)

I am not sure what operating system you are using but this is what I use:

MR-8
USB cable
Fostex wave manager (downoad for free at www.fostex.com)
Cakewalk Clubtracks (music editing software)

I record my tracks and send them in seconds to my PC to be mixed and saved there.

So the answer is yes to all of your questions. SOme of the other folks here use different music editing programs that are newer and nicer than mine so ask around but let us know what kind of computer you are using first so that you do not buy the wrong equipment.

scourge,
You're not an idiot, you just need to spend some time reading some of the posts in this forum. I'll give you a brief answer to your questions though.

1. Your MR8 is really designed to be used in conjunction with your PC. There's a jack in the back for a USB cable which goes directly to the computer.
2. You will need to d/l the Wave MAnager software from the Fostex site to make transferring tracks easier.
3. A lot of us use n-Track for mixing on the computer. It is available as a free d/l but to be fully functional, you'll need to ante up $45.

This should get you started, links to all above are available somewhere on this forum...just gotta look around a little. Good luck and welcome to the board.

Above all else, never give up. Believe in yourself and always push to learn more. Some of this stuff is hard to understand, even for those who have done this for years. Take great pride in every success, and always view anything less as a learning opportunity. And even though it gets very frustrating, always remember your original vision, and how much fun all this is.
And never forget, in this forum, your with friends. As for myself, I find that Clubtracks was well worth the price, and has all the features I could ever want.

Welcome Scourge. I second what the guys are telling you and would like to add something. When I started I did searches within the Fostex forum and learned a lot.

I *think* that you can use pro tools to edit M-8 tracks. Isn't it just music editing software right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I never send tracks back to the MR-8 to mix/master, there is just not enough room or functionabilty to do it.

Try club tracks> I bought it for 10.00 from musician's friend and it work great for me. I have windows XP and had to run the compatabilty wizard tool (see the microsoft website and type in "compatibilty" and it will ive you instructions on how to use it)in order to get clubtracks to work on XP but I have had no problems since then. CLubtracks is an older program that is optomized for win 98.

You can only play around with 8 tracks maximum with club tracks but for right now it suits me just fine.

let me know if you have any more questions.

usb

hey is it alright to leave the mr-8 conected to my computer permanantly with the usb or should i just connect it when i move stuff to the computer from the mr-8

I leave mine connected all the time. Really unless you put the MR-8 in USB mode it is not an active connection.

thanx gospel

hey im just curious to know if my computer will work ok for this recording stuff i really know nothing about computers (just learning)here is the specs;intel celeron processor 22GHz, 60GB ultra dma hard drive, 252mb ddr sdram with up to 64 mb shared video memory, cdrw/dvd rom combo drive 32x10x12x40xcd max speed. i really know what none of this means i just got it off the box. for all i know its just useless info. but here it is anyway.
thanx bryan

cool thanx

now for the important question......whats for lunch?

monitors

ok i have a pair of powered referance monitors on there way how or where do i hook them up if im mixing on the computer. my computer only has a little 1/8inch jack for my computer monitors to plug in i realizethis is probably a dumb question but here it is anyway.the monitors have digital inputs and analoginputs.

Ok, get a 1/8" male stereo > RCA female (L & R mono) adapter. As you haven't seen your monitors yet, you won't know what type of hook-up to use but that's what I use in the "LINE OUT" jack of my soundcard.
