Hey guys, I'm finally getting some songs together instead of wasting all my time screwing around! :D Here is one I put together yesterday and made a rough mix of. I still need to do all the lead guitars, but I though I would get some opinions on this mix so far as you guys are always a big help in this department. I welcome opinions on anything!

Nice guitar tone. Very clean when muted!!! Tight playing, as usual. Nice drum sounds. I'd personally like to hear more of the bass guitar in this. Seems buried except for the one slide at 1:45, and the interlude that follows. Other than that, cool tune.

that's pretty good... tight guitars

balance seems Okay, but I really wanted to feel the chugg, chugg, chugg

the guitar tones are Okay, but heavier and thicker would be a lot better

at 1:24 the bass jumped out... maybe take a listen

maybe a tad more kick click

enjoyed it... :)

Thanks for the listen guys. I know what you mean about the guitar tone. These days I tend to favor really clean and clear guitars for my own stuff without much gain. Listening back sometimes I think they are too weak, kind of like you mentioned, but at the same time I sort of like them that way. I don't know, but I appreciate the opinions!

The guitars also have very little low end in them. Anybody think I would be better off with more low end in the guitars and more midrange presence in the bass?

Thanks again guys!

Articulate playing as always. To my non-metal ear, I think the gtr would be better balanced with a bit more lows and low-mids. It'd be very effective IMO to alternate to the existing tone in certain sections because it sounds good in its clarity - it just leaves me wanting a little more solidity.

Impressive rhythmic control, keeping the L/R gtrs so tight with the 16ths.

Tim

Thanks, Tim!
I appreciate your "non-metal" ears and I just may try that ;)

Sounds good. The low gain definately makes notes more audible. I took everybody's advice and turned my gain down awhile back and just tracked more times, 8 for that big sound when needed.

More low end would work... And maybe a bit more around the 3K area or something. Try tracking 2 more takes or something, to thicken it up a bit, just see how it works out. Great playing by the way, has that old Megadeth feel to it, something off Rust in Peace or something.

i like it!! the best thing i ever did was lower the gain when tracking guitars. the snare sounds a little dark to me, it makes it a bit buried. the low end is slightly flabby but i fight w/ that too and i still havent found a cure.

...

cool stuff. leaves a lot of room for vocals over the stop-and-go riffage. if no vox will be done, I think it'll need a counter melody going on over those parts. love the breakdown at around 1:50 - the drums really come alive there, and sound less processed.

any lyrics? damn this sounds bad ass. makes me wanna sing on it or something, haha. oh and that kick sounds awesome.

the recording is good but it takes to long to get to the chorus; or its kindda of repetative on the way there.

Excellent rhythm tones. You could probably get away with a tad more gain but you might lose some of the clarity. Maybe consider another set of rhythm guitars if you really want to thicken it up. The low end sounds fine to me, as far as the guitars go.
Would like to hear this with the leads and stuff.

Thanks for the listen and the comments everybody.
Green Dank, I do definitely have lyrics for this and I just have to convince myself that I can perform them properly before I commit them to the recording. This song is called "Daggers", and the vocals are a very sparse and disjointed affair. I also have a simple counter melody that I'll be doing in between the vocals during the main riff at the beginning and end of the song.

First Don, thanks and I'm thinking that with the vocals and lead guitar in there it won't seem so repetitive. Hopefully :D

Wireneck, I'm thinking about putting down another 2 tracks of rhythm guitars. I'll see how it works.

Thanks to all!

I like the overall song. The recording was well executed. Especially the opening. A very powerful start always makes me like a song more.

I felt that the drums needed a little bit more low end. Well, not all of the drums... Just the snare and the toms. A lite reverb would also work well. Just something to add a little more ambience to the background of the song. The cymbals are top notch, though.

I think that the bass needs to be pushed up a bit. Not much but it kinda gets lost and then pokes it's head out from time to time.

Also, it felt like the guitars needed a little more gain they come off sounding a bit 80's-ish). And I think some artificial harmonics would favor the sound of the guitar in the break around 1:35.

You might want to put a little more emphasis on your fill around 2:31. I was expecting something a little more explosive. But, in general, its not bad. In fact, it's pretty good.

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Statistick, Thanks for the advice. It's very much appreciated.

Great song....

WARNING (I am listening on small crap computer speakers)

With that said....

There is something missing from the guitars If I had to take a stab at it I would say it is a lack of midrange bit. I actually think the guitars could stand to have a little more distortion and be clear. I think if you gave the tone a little more mid bite it would still stay clear. As far as the low end goes like I said it is kind of hard for me to judge because of these speakers but I will try to anyways. Since there is a lot of clean 16th note going on with the guitars I feel like this should be driven by the kick. It should thump. Not like THuuuuuuuuuuuuump. But thUMp....hahaha.....Serious though the kick should be felt in the chest. It would give the listener the idea that the guitar is really pounding on the palm mutes. I guess a perfect example would be Lamb of Gods newest record Ashes of the Wake. The guitars are a little brittle but as whole the album is huge and clear. Kind of a lot to shoot for but why not. The bass guitar should handle most of the perceived fundamentals of the guitar. Ehhh who the hell am I…..

Good work….

Thanks, Chad
Can I assume you are suggesting a little more 100-200 Hz "whoomp" in the kick sound? ...haha..I said "whoomp" :D ..is that a word? Anybody got a better word?
I was actually on the verge of thinking that the kick was too much as it is.

Thanks for the comments!

I really can't tell until I get home tonight(mointers). I don't know maybe the kick is eq'ed fine but might need a diffrent compression. Generally though I am usually not referring to things 150 and above in a kick, more so 80-120. Like I said I like to feel the meat of the kick and hear the click.

I really enjoyed the guitar tones. It has a diffrent sound than everything that is already out there. I very much enjoyed this clip.

That's a hell of a thing to say. Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Hopefully I can finish it up soon and re-post it.
