I've been recording digitally for about 10 or 12 years. One of the first pieces of equipment I bought and used was a previously owned Tascam digital stand alone recorder. Since then I have used just about anything you can imagine. I have used the Boss BR-1180, I have used several Firewire interfaces including the Presonus Firepod and various Focusrite one's. I've used Cubase, and Garageband along with with several other brands of software.

In the last month I have decided to completely start over. Right now I am using the my iPad with the Alesis IO Dock and Cubasis software. I plan on the very near future getting a Mac Mini and Logic. I'm not sure of what interface just yet, I think I may be leaning to the Focusrite again (any suggestions are more than welcome).

I have some older condenser mics but I just purchased a Rode NT1 and so far so good. Anyone else have any experience with this mic and what do you think?

she wants to record herself singing. She has limited understanding for a 20yr old tho, so a lot of software would be too advanced for her. If we could get a package that allowed her to use her i tunes as backing music and that would record her singing, she would be very happy.

Just from this post I get the feeling you are young, and wanting to sound like the stuff you hear as quickly as possible. Whether or not this is the objective, you have come to the right place for advice to get there.

It is not going to happen quickly though. You will learn quickly by the advice of members here.

Only solution of reasonable cost.....
Tascam US 1800 and as many microphones
/cables/stands as you can afford up to 8. Some of the drum kit multi mic packages might be good value, I wouldn't know.

Microphones to seek out? Deff' a couple of Shure SM57/58s, several Small Diaphragm Capacitors (aka condenser). MAYBE a big, LDC side address jobbie for lead singer, plus pop shields for as many as you are going to gob at.

Headphones. To keep costs down the Sennheiser HD 202's are very acceptable. Depending how you are going to work, headphone splitter amp.

I would guess we are up to $2000 US by now and you still don't have any monitors speakers! Given the outlay for even a passing decent recording rig as mooted, I STRONGLY suggest you invest a few £100 in professional studio time and get an idea "how it's done"!

This is AWESOME advice. I spent several years in studio in the 80s. I only considered doing it myself in the last year, but what I learned about mike placement, eq and other things in someone else's studio became invaluable when I put together my own.

Indeed, and note! We need makes and model numbers. Also make sure you have downloaded all user manuals and drivers for all the equipment. A notebook and pen is handy to jot down passwords and other information you might need to keep for software activation.

A second computer is MOST handy to view manuals on and get on the internet whilst the "music" computer is otherwise engaged.
