LPHutch here, steel string acoustic, vocalist and song writer. Twelve song copyrights. Lots of ideas to capture. Currently trying to figure out how to email unmixed tracks and have them sync with family member's system for remote (time and place) collaboration.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here; just joined. I used to write a lot of music -- aiming for a 60s folk vibe at first -- and have recently returned to a trove of old songs with renewed passion. I'm planning to record them at my apartment, and recently bought an Apogee Duet 2 to use as an audio interface. As a mic, I'm using what I think is relatively low grade: a Shure SM57. I've been experimenting over the past few days with this equipment, recording shitty covers of Wilco stuff mostly. Right now my big thing is figuring out how to properly mix, and optimize my set up so the vocal recording quality doesn't sound amateurish. Needless to say I'm an absolute novice at home recording, so I'm excited to learn some stuff from you guys and get a decent collection of songs put to tape!

Hi,
New here, although I have had many of my recording questions answered in the past, by viewing threads on this site. So, thought it was about time that I actively participate in the discussion and provide my limited insight.

I purely write and record music for fun. Don't have any notions or desire for anything more than self enjoyment, but it is nice when people appreciate my work and effort. Nevertheless, I'm always chasing the best possible result....trying to craft a great song...with a recording I'm 100% satisfied with. Ha. We all have dreams.

Importantly, I write and perform songs in the garage punk genre of rock and roll. Just what I enjoy to listen to, as well as perform with my band. Accordingly, my recordings are not extremely polished, yet they are not completely deficient of dynamic sounds and arrangements.

I am well versed in analog and digital recording, but certainly do not consider myself a sound engineer or producer. Still bust out the Tascam 4 track and reel to reel from time to time for fun. I've had my share of complete DAW projects, with Pro Tools, Cubase, etc. Nevertheless, I've simplified everything lately, using a Tascam Neo for my projects and exporting out to Pro Tools for mixing/ production. A travel friendly approach, without too much sound sacrifice.

Most of my gear has been bought at estate and yard sales. Rarely, do I find the need to purchase musical/ recording gadgets new. That said, I've collected many nice amps, preamps, mics, drum sets, recorders, over the last few years for very little money. Owned , used, and sold lots of high end equipment just because it did not suit my needs or sound. I only keep the items that I want to use on a regular basis for recording or performance. Lot less confusion in the classroom.

So, I'm always trying to improve with my recording approach, mixing skills, and overall knowledge through experimentation. Looking for advice/ ideas before anything is actually recorded. Ideas pertaining to sound structuring, layering prior to recording. Likewise, mixing advice is always appreciated! Thanks!

Hellooooo, so I totally forgot to do this when I made an account... so HEY

The name's Nick, I'm a 20 y/o guy from SE England. Quite socially awkward so I just do music!
Nearly finished a degree in Animation (which i'm bored of), so after that I have no idea what i'm gonna be doing but something music related would be fucking amazing.
(dream on, yeah I know).

Nick, why not both? Youtube, animation and some music to pull it all together. Might work, aka Heavy Metal?

Hi. I'm Billy. I'm not exactly a newbie, but shall we say, a really slow learner? I have a fairly old computer, but it's adequate. the guy who put it together for me suggested not going on the net for fear of bugaboos. so I haven't. it has no card to hook up to the internet. only thing on there is Windows XP and Cubase 4. I really need to find an easy to understand tutorial for the Cubase just to get some tracks down before I get too old. I've been at this a long time and seem to be spinning my wheels. maybe I have a learning disability. how do ya know a thing like that? anyway, help! thanks :)

Hey guys! :P
I started out in September 2013 and I'm glad to say that I've improved a lot since then :p
I've got 3 songs out and I'm working on my 4th song which is my first collaboration project as well :D
I hope to increase my production skillset because I have some crazy ideas in my head but I just can't get them down. :/
I have spent a lot of time looking for good tutorials for FL Studio (my DAW), but I have found only a few. :/
I kind of know my way in FL Studio now. It's just the tips and tricks I'm looking for now. Any tutorials online which could help me to do that? I'll really appreciate it if you could help :P
I'm also learning to play the piano side-by-side so I can make some sick melodies. :D
Managing music with school is kind of tough, so it was kinda hard for me to get on with my music.
But now I'm free ^_^
Hope I have a good time around here and learn a lot of things :P
Thanks. :)

Newbie here. Home recording hobbyist bordering on obsessed. I mainly use PreSonus Studio One Pro for my DAW, Audiobox 1818VSL interface, AKG cans and Alesis monitors, and Shure 57s/Beta 52A/AT-2020s/AT-PRO 37s for mics, nothing fancy, pretty entry level stuff but I get the sound I'm looking for most of the time. For fun I use various alternate recording configurations: TASCAM 414, BOSS BR-1180. I just really enjoy tinkering and I'm always looking for projects to record, mostly rock music. Very happy to have found this forum. I've been digging through and I'm finding all kinds of great knowledge. I can't wait to post some mixes for feedback.

Hello all. I am a full-blown newbie to the wild and wonderful world of recording. I have been writing and playing music since I was a small child, toured, worked in music distribution, etc. I have reached the point where I am tired of paying others to record my music. I arrived at this juncture about a year and a half ago but just recently purchased my first interface (Saffire Pro 40) and installed Logic Pro X on my MacBook Pro. Let the learning begin!

Hello. I've been lurking and finally decided to join. This forum has tons of awesome info, and I hope I can contribute something worthwhile occasionally. I play guitar - hard rock and metal, but I really get into home recording/mixing/etc with Reaper.

Hi all, my name is Pete. I've been on radio, TV, feature and short films, and on the stage in community productions. For years, I've wanted to own my own radio station so I could broadcast new audio plays in the style of old-time radio, and never thought I'd be able to. However, with this new-fangled interwebs and podcasting, I have written and launched a series of new dramas, recording them in my home office/studio, adding music and SFX, and posting them at archive.org for free streaming and download. For my casts I'm using local actors from the playhouse.

My first two episodes were done with cheap mini-mics mounted in the shells of vintage EV and Philips models, fed through a homemade passive mixer that -- believe it or not -- made its own hum, how convenient! Since December, though, I've been able to put enough money and gear together to produce a higher quality sound and product.

I'm going to start the recording of Episode 3 of my series next week, and I am looking forward to producing something with a professional sound. My mics are: 2 vintage Shure 51s (soon to be 3) and an EV model 630, all in outstanding working order. (I also just got a Blue Snowball, which is soooooo nice.) My preamp/audio interface will be (arrives today!) an Akai EIE I/O. My editing software is Cool Edit Pro (I've been producing/editing stuff for about 8 years now: other people's radio shows; LPs, cassettes and 78s, and self-made children's audiobooks for my grandson.

So this is a lot of stuff for an introduction, but I didn't find a forum for my particular brand of audiophilia, so I wanted to get it all out there, in case somebody else shares my interests and can point me in the right direction. I hope to learn a lot from you fine people!

Pete
